So let's imagine you've gone to the grocery store.

さっそく、スーパーにいったとしましょう

You're in the bread section and you've grabbed two loaves of bread.

パン・セクションで２つパンを買うとしましょう

You've made your way to the front and you're going through the checkout and the cashier

レジへ向かい、お会計をします、レジの人に

rings you through and says, "That'll be $7.45 please".

「７ドル４５セントです」といわれます

"That'll be $7.45 please".

「７ドル４５セントです」

And you didn't quite hear what they said.

よく聞き取れなかった場合

Now you could just say, "What did you say?"

シンプルに「なんと言いましたか？」と聞くことができますが

But this is considered kind of direct and somewhat impolite and rude.

少し直接すぎ、失礼に聞こえてしますかもしれません

So you could say "Pardon me?" which is much more polite.

なので、「Pardon me?すみません」というのが丁寧でいいでしょう

Or you could say "Pardon?" which is polite.

または、「Pardon?」も丁寧ですね

But if you wanted to inquire about the exact amount you could ask questions like this:

もし、金額をもう一度言って欲しいという表現をしたい場合は：

"I'm sorry I didn't quite hear you.

「すみません、あまり聞き取れませんでした、

What was the total?"

合計はいくらですか？」

Or

または

"I'm sorry.

「すみません、

How much do I owe?"

おいくらになりますか？」を使いましょう

And the cashier will respond with the amount and you'll be able to pay and you'll be able

レジ員に金額を教えてもらい、会計を済ませたあと、

to make your way out of the store.
