I'm 22 years old, it's my last year in college.

I'm just trying to figure out what's next, I guess.

You're a senior in high school?

Do you know what your major is?

Probably international affairs.

How did you go about choosing that?

I thought I wanted to be a nurse because I wanted to help people.

私は看護婦になりたいんだと思ってたの。だって、人助けをしたかったから。

And I found out that it was not good fit for me and so, I wasted like two years and some money.

そしたら、私にはそれはあんまり向いていないって気づいたわけ。だから、お金と2年間の時間を無駄にしちゃったのね。

I'm still learning so much about myself.

まだ自分自身についてたくさん学んでいるところで、

There's so many things that I like, and so it's just like, it's hard to narrow it down.

好きな事もいっぱいあるんで、だからこう、なかなか絞り切れないんですよ。

In high school, I had enjoyed taking my typing class and I liked being organized.

高校の時は、タイピングの授業が楽しくて、物事をキチッと管理するのも好きだったから。

My friend suggested how about clerical, how about going into secretarial?

友達が「事務職なんかどう」って提案してきて、秘書科のコースを学んでみたらとか。

So I went back to college, changed my major, learned that, and I had many happy years as an administrative assistant.

それで大学に入り直して、専攻を変えたの。無事修了して、その後長い間に渡って受付アシスタントとして働いてた時は楽しかった。

Also I advise young people to talk to people who know them really well, whether it's a best friend, a boyfriend or girlfriend, and they'll probably have a very good insight.

あとは、若い人へのアドバイスとしては、自分をよく知ってくれている人と話をすること。親友でもいいし、彼氏、彼女でもいいから。そういう人たちは多分自分という人間についてよく理解してくれているから。

I was the only black person an all-white football team and I was the quarterback and the captain.

俺なんか、周りは皆白人のアメフトチームで唯一の黒人選手だったんだ。そこでクォーターバックでキャプテンもやってさ。

So I took that discipline of all of that stuff with me to UCLA and had a great time.

それで、そこで学んだ自制心なんかをそのままUCLA時代も継続させて、すごく良い時を過ごしたよ。

But I made my own rules.

でも自分の中で線引きはしっかりとしたけどな。

And you can count all of the black people at our school, and I was one of them and it was just like, and on top of me being like gay and being openly gay and androgynous, like, you know, it was like definitely--

そもそもうちの学校の中に黒人なんてそんなに多くいないわけで、僕はそのうちの1人で、だからなんていうか、それでさらに僕はゲイだし、それをオープンにしてて、男女両性でもあるし、だから、その、かなり、、、

It's a challenge.

そりゃ大変だよな。

It was a lot of challenge but I liked it.

かなり大変だったけど、それはそれで楽しかったかな。

Intellectually, spiritually, and passionately, you were above it all.

知的側面とか霊的にもそうだし、感情においても、キミは全てにうわまわっていたんだな。

That's how you were able to pull it off.

だからこそ、それだけ上手くやってのけることができたんだよ。

So love, I mean, I'm about that age where I should be starting to look for my partner in crime.

それで恋愛なんだけど、だって私もそろそろそれなりの相手を探し始める年になってきてるわけで。

I met my husband in college.

夫とは大学で知り合ったの。

I just liked so much about him.

ただ、この人の事が本当に好きで。

Of course, the big test was to meet the family.

もちろん、家族に会わせる時が最大の試練ってやつで。

I'm the only girl in the family so every single person's gonna be so protective.

うちの家族の中に女の子って私しかいないから、皆してかなり過保護になると思うんです。

Very protective.

かなり過保護にね。

I feel bad for whoever I pick.

私が選んだ相手に申し訳ないって感じで。

Oh geez.

あーあ。

But I think when it's the right fit, he'll fit right in and they'll love him like a son.

でもね、もしピッタリの人だったら、問題なく溶け込んでいけるし、家族のみんなも息子の様に可愛がってくれるわよ。

They always say, like you know, you, I guess, like you want what you can't have.

まあ、よく言われてる通り、結局はその、自分には手が届かないものを欲しくなるっていうか。

I guess that goes along those lines because I feel like I've through that too.

何となくそれに似た感覚みたいな、というのも自分でも思い当たるフシがあるから。

But I was always after the one that was just not really, I mean, that's just my experience.

でも、僕が気になった人っていつもそんなに…まあ、あくまで自分の経験なんだけど。

You know, I'm after the one...

その、惹かれる人っていうのは…

You always want what you can't have.

いっつも自分の手の届かない人がいいわけだ。

Yeah, that was just like kind of like, not texting me back as much and just being like whatever, you know, short and because it was just more of a, it was like more intriguing.

そう、なんていうか、例えばなかなかテキストメッセージも返してくれなくて、内容も、適当な、短いヤツで。そうすると、もっとこう、どっちかっていうと、興味そそられるわけで。

That's always a learning experience.

そういうのからいつも学ぶわけさ。

Why do I want that?

何でそういうのがいいんだろう？

Why can't I get it?

何でダメなんだろう？

What's the best for me?

自分にとって何がベストなんだろう？

Sometimes you have to just let it slide.

時には成り行きに任せるしかないわけだし。

As my old grandmother used to say, do without and keep on moving.

俺のばあちゃんがよく言ってたのは、何とかやり過ごしてただ前に進みなさい、って。

You know, I have just such a broad spectrum of friends and we're very open with one another.

俺は結構幅広い範囲に渡って友達がいるんだけど、お互いに対してかなりオープンなわけさ。

Be that way.

Stay open.

いつもオープンに。

Keep the lines of communication open.

コミュニケーションを欠かさずに。

Always make known your feelings so there is no confusion.

自分の気持ちをいつも分かってもらえるように心がけて。そうすれば混乱することもないから。

Having raised four sons, we never had a lot of extra cash.

息子を 4 人も育ててたから、余分なお金なんてたくさんは無かったの。

But we always look for opportunities to have fun.

でも、いつも楽しくいられるようにとは心掛けてはいたのね。

Watching the sunrise over the mountain or the sunset over the ocean.

山の向こうから上る朝日とか、海に沈む夕日を眺めたり。

A kiss, a hug, a smile.

キス、ハグ、笑顔。

There's a lot of beauty to be found in life.

人生の中には、美しいことってたくさん見つけられるものなの。

- And it doesn't cost a penny. - Nothing.

そして、お金なんてこれっぽっちもかからない。　何にも。

The worst regrets that I've heard is people saying that they were too busy chasing success or being selfish with their time.

一番ひどい後悔っていうのは、よくみんな成功を収めるのに忙しくし過ぎた、とか自分の時間を自己中心的に使ってしまったって。

That they didn't spend time or take time for their families.

つまり家族のために時間を費やしたり、時間を割いたりしなかった、ってよく聞くでしょ。

You make me want to call my parents.

何か両親に電話したくなってきちゃった。

That's good.
