I remember one of my very first networking situations, I basically went and hid.

初めてネットワーキングの場に立った時のことを覚えています。隠れてしまいました。

I mean, I wasn't wrapped up in a curtain in the corner or anything, but I didn't talk to anybody, and it was total waste of time.

角のカーテンにくるまって隠れていたわけじゃないですが、誰とも話をせず、完全に時間の無駄でした。

But now that I've learned a few bits and pieces and gotten used to it,

ですが今はいくつかコツを掴み、慣れましたよ。

I have a much richer experience of networking and it definitely pays off.

今はネットワーキングでより有意義な経験をすることができ、とても価値のあるものだと思います。

I know it's a little bit awkward, but it's absolutely worth it.

ちょっと気まずいですが、確実に価値はありますよ。

You might meet someone who can help you directly, or you might meet someone who can connect you to someone in their network.

あなたを直接手助けできる人と出会えたり、そのネットワーク内の人に紹介してもらえる人と出会えるかもしれません。

So, for example, I remember going to an event and meeting a podiatrist, and he was able to introduce me to the Australian editor of "Harper's Bazaar".

なので、例えばあるイベントに行って足治療医にあったのを覚えていますが、彼にオーストラリアのハーパーズ バザーの編集者に紹介してもらいました。

I mean, that was so unexpected and cool.

予想もしていなかった収穫でした。

So, I put together a bunch of tips, of things that I've learnt over the years that might help you in networking.

なので、今回たくさんのコツ - 何年もかけて学んだことでみなさんの助けになりそうなものを集めました。

Tip number 1, introduce yourself.

コツ 1 : 自己紹介をすること

I know that seems super obvious, but it is a bit of a weird social situation.

これはかなり基本的に思えますが、ソーシャルの場ではちょっと変に感じます。

So, if I walk into a room, and there's a group of people, what I tend to do is walk up to them and just say, "Hi, do you mind if I join you?"

まず、部屋に入り、人の集まりがいます、そこで私がするのは、集まりに近づき「こんにちは、私もご一緒してもいいですか？」と聞くことです。

And, of course, they will welcome you.

すると、もちろん向こうは歓迎してくれます。

Be friendly; don't just get straight into business.

Ask how their day's been, and then that next question can be, "So, tell me what you do?"

今日どんな 1 日を過ごしているのか、そして次に「どんなお仕事されてるんですか？」と質問をします。

And, there, you've introduced yourself, and it's pretty easygoing.

そして自己紹介をすれば簡単です。

On the flip side, if you're in the group of people and you see someone standing by themselves, then invite them into your group.

逆に集団の中に自分がいて、誰かが輪に入らずに立っている場合、輪の中に歓迎しましょう。

That way, you've done something really nice to them, actually, 'cause it's, you know, they're obviously experiencing a bit of awkwardness.

そうすることで、あなたは彼らに親切をすることができます。皆さんもお分かりの通り、彼らは少し気まずさを感じているのです。

And secondly, you've met another person.

そして、あなたもまた違う人と出会うことができますからね。

Tip number 2 is short conversations.

コツ 2 つ目：簡単な会話

So, nobody is going to think that you're rude at all for having a short conversation.

まず、簡単な短い会話をしても誰も失礼だと思わないということです。

I mean, don't be abrupt, but, look, you're not there to lock in and become best friends and all that sort of stuff.

無愛想にならないこと、でもがっつり食いついて親友などを探しにきているわけでありませんよ。

That might happen in the future, but definitely, at this event, you're there to make lots and lots of connections.

将来こういったことがあるかもしれませんが、こういうイベントではたくさんのコネを作ることが目的です。

So, have like short, meaningful conversations and keep going.

なので、簡単な意味のある会話をして、コネを広げて行きましょう。

Tip number 3, business cards.

コツ 3 つ目：名刺

Don't forget to take your business cards with you.

忘れずに名刺を持って行きましょう。

I've totally done this before, and it's a huge pain in the butt.

これは私も経験があります、大変ですよね。

Also, to anyone whose business card you get, make sure you e-mail them within 24 hours.

また、名刺をもらったら、その人に 24 時間以内に必ずメールで連絡をしましょう。

This is for both of you.

これはあなたも相手も同じことです。

So, for you, so you remember, you know, why you made that connection.

なのでこうすることでまずあなたは、コネを持った理由を覚えることができるということです。

Secondly, so, you're still fresh in their mind.

2 つ目は、相手の記憶にあなたがまだ新しいということ。

And thirdly, so that when you do inevitably lose their business card, you'll have their details logged somewhere.

そして 3 つ目は名刺を無くしてしまった場合、相手の詳細がどこかに残されるということです。
