It's been awhile since I've done a video and I feel really, really bad about that.
I'm not the kind of person who doesn't finish things; in fact, it drives me crazy
when I don't have enough time to complete all the tasks that I set out to
do. But the past few months have been super busy for me with courses, work,
vacation, family commitments, etc. and unfortunately there just wasn't enough
time to film. So I thought it would be a good idea to do a video on how to manage
your time, especially when life gets busy. And I think I can take my own advice here.
Does it always seem like there's something else to do? Like your work is never done? And when you finally
do get some relax time, you find yourself sitting there thinking of what
else you need to do? We've all been there! In fact, I think it's something that we
all struggle with at one time or another. So here are a few tips to help you
manage your time so that you can complete what you need to complete, but
also fit in some R&R time too. #1 is Time Blocking. This is a great way
to block out certain periods of time throughout your day so that you know
exactly what you're working on during that period of time. It's great to make
yourself a to-do list, but what can happen is we keep adding to that to-do
list without really thinking about how much time each task will take. So
oftentimes we add more to the list then time or energy will allow. Then, at the
end of the day when we haven't completed everything on the list, we get
overwhelmed & disappointed. So for me, instead of randomly adding film video
or write video script to my list, I should time block from 7-8:30 a.m.
for scriptwriting, 9-10 a.m. for answering email & client follow-up,
10:30-11:30 is for walking my dogs and 1-2:30 is
for client appointments etc.
This adds more structure to my day instead of just adding more & more to the list
and hoping there's enough time in the day to complete everything. #2 is Track
Your Progress. For each completed task on your time blocking schedule, highlight it,
put a checkmark beside it or just mark it as completed. This will help you feel a
sense of accomplishment so that you keep going with the rest of your tasks.
You'll also feel relieved that you're well on your way to completing your list,
which ultimately does not create stress.
#3 is Limit Distractions. Only focus on one thing at a time and
that one thing is what you schedule into that certain time block. So turn off your
email, your cell phone, social media - all the things that distract us. In fact, it's
a good idea to actually time block when you will return phone calls, check your
voicemails, return emails and check your Facebook status. In fact, let's
talk about social media for a minute.
Have you ever gone on to Facebook thinking you're just gonna quickly check
your status and an hour later you're still scrolling through? Facebook drain
or social media drain is a huge time waster. If you think about it, how much
time do you spend on social media every single day? Then add that up over a
period of a week. How many hours is that? Think of everything you could have
accomplished in that time. So really make an effort to make sure that you
don't get sidetracked by time wasters like this.
#4 is Take Breaks. So as important as it is to time block
periods of time are you need to get things completed, it's also important to
block out time for relaxation or YOU time. This could be just a half hour
throughout the day to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or an hour to walk the
dogs or get out and have a walk in nature.
Or you can schedule an evening to just lay on the couch and watch Netflix.
And you can do that; because you've completed everything on your list!
Relax time like this is very important because it helps you to recharge your
batteries so that you have the mental capacity and the energy to complete
everything on your list. And it also gives you something to look forward to
throughout the day. #5 is to understand that sometimes you're just
gonna have to eliminate something from the list or reschedule it as there just isn't
enough time to get everything done. Things can pop up and sometimes there are days
took an unexpected turn, forcing us to focus on things that we didn't schedule.
If that happens, just remember that's life. Don't beat yourself up about it. Just
simply reschedule the task for another day and know that you did everything you
could to complete the task, but due to circumstances out of your control, you
just simply couldn't get it done. And last but certainly not least, get a good
night's sleep
Nobody can be productive when they're tired and dragging their feet. Try to
get between 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
This will help you to be alert, think straight and give you the energy to get
through your day. I'm sure there are other tips that you have, this is just a
short list. So if you do have some tips, be sure to leave a comment below,
so we can all learn better how to manage our time. I hope you enjoyed this
week's tidbit. If you like this video, be sure to like it, share it, or SUBSCRIBE to my
