  • I'm never gonna forget my first Vogue shoot.

  • It was just outside Nashville,

  • middle of this field,

  • And basically Annie Leibovitz, who shot the photos,

  • wanted me to just like dance around in this field

  • with my guitar and just kind of be myself,

  • which was so nice.

  • It's really nice when people tell you to just be yourself.

  • Down to the fact that when I was on tour,

  • I used to draw a 13 on my hand

  • every single night.

  • And I would draw it on with a sharpie and some eyeliner.

  • It was a very specific combination.

  • But I used to just like actually wake up in the morning

  • And it would be just like imprinted on my face.

  • Fun fact, how to get sharpie off of your skin: hairspray.

  • Anyway,

  • I have drifted so far from the point.

  • this is a piece on my first Vogue shoot.

  • It is a freezing cold day in Franklin, Tennessee.

  • And we are on the middle of nowhere, pretty much.

  • This is Vogue, the Nashville edition.

  • Wow, this is cool.

  • I'm so excited

  • because this is my first shoot that I've ever done with Annie Leibovitz.

  • I met her like 15 minutes ago

  • and she is really, really awesome.

  • Really, really laid-back.

  • This is my first Vogue shoot.

  • So...

  • It's going really, really well so far.

  • Like, they told me that I can keep this on my hand.

  • Like, they want me to keep this.

  • And I thought they would, for sure,

  • like, want me to take that off.

  • Because...

  • that's what 95%

  • probably 99% of all photoshoots

  • would want me to wipe that off.

  • But they want me to keep the way it was, so...

  • That's really nice.

  • About to get really cold.

  • Really fast.

  • I met Annie Leibovitz and she was incredibly nice.

  • And sweet.

  • She had YouTubed of all kinds of performances of mine.

  • And paused them where she liked

  • the poses.

  • Like where I'd just like throw my hair up on the stage.

  • She would pause it.

  • And go: "that's the kind of the photo I wanna get."

  • We went outside to this field.

  • It was pretty cold.

  • We were outside.

  • The weather was really cloudy.

  • And just kind of looked terrible.

  • But Annie was saying:

  • "No, this is the best.

  • This is the best weather you can have.

  • This is great. This is prefect."

  • And I later saw the photos.

  • That's...

  • the best kind of weather we could have that day.

  • She shot really fast.

  • I wasn't expecting that she would be done so quickly.

  • I literally just put on a couple of songs

  • And I was dancing around, moshing

  • in the field.

  • And then, within a minute, we were done.

  • I was like, oh that's cool.

  • We just finished. That was the fastest shoot ever.

  • Thank you so much.

  • Cool.

  • So I just wrapped my first Vogue shoot.

  • And it was so much fun. It was amazing.

  • I was just dancing around in the field,

  • blasting music the whole time.

  • And it was over before I knew it.

  • We did two set ups.

  • One where I had like

  • minimum makeup on it.

  • And then they,

  • had me put on

  • my own lipstick.

  • It was like the coolest thing in the world that

  • Vogue, the fashion magazine, is like,

  • "You can just be yourself.

  • And put on your own makeup.

  • And just do whatever.

  • It was really, really cool.

  • It was the most laid-back shoot ever.

  • Love it.

  • When you releasing an album,

  • you start really early in the process.

  • There are a couple different phases of the promotion.

  • And I like to think of phase 1 as photo shoot phase.

  • We have the glamorous cover shoot.

  • This is my second glamorous cover shoot.

  • that I've ever done.

  • I am so excited.

  • We're doing sort of a,

  • retro, 60s,

  • glint singer kind of thing.

  • We have old microphones,

  • and clothes and stuff.

  • And they made my hair big which I'm really excited about.

  • So, wish me luck!

  • It's really fun to start out

  • the whole promotion process

  • with a bunch of fun photo shoots

  • where they make you look different for every single cover.

  • For me, it's really important to have music on

  • during the photo shoot because

  • in a sense, you're dancing

  • in front of a whole bunch of people

  • because for a cover, they need your body to be in, like,

  • kind of curved or a different shape than it.

  • Than every other cover.

  • So they're always trying to get you to

  • look at a different way

  • or different, just kind of, different formation or whatever.

  • So, for me, the best way to do that

  • is just dance much.

  • And I just kind of turn it into posing/dancing.

  • which doesn't feel so much like posing

  • Cause' there is music on.

  • Music makes everything sort of like a performance.

  • I had a few really hectic weeks

  • of photo shoots almost everyday.

  • For me, I try not to think of that as work.

  • I just think of it as like

  • free hair and makeup tip day.

  • So here I am,

  • on my fifth magazine shoot in one week.

  • We've literally shot five covers in ONE WEEK.

  • Well, today we're shooting Taylor Swift's

  • 3rd Seventeen Magazine cover.

  • And we're doing it in her home town

  • of Nashville, Tennessee.

  • So this is the before

  • And the after it will probably I'll have better posture.

  • And sort of be cover ready

  • Maybe. We'll hope.

  • We're hoping for cover ready.

  • But I come in and kind of,

  • all scrap like this.

  • Ok, I am gonna set Taylor's hair

  • with some velcro rolls

  • give it a lot of volume.

  • Then take an iron and just sort of,

  • really define a way

  • a wave and not too tight curl this time

  • Just really beautiful flowing hair.

  • So I am fully Seventeen up.

  • They relaxed my hair.

  • They made it a lot less curly.

  • This is what ends up being the after effect

  • of two hours of hair and makeup.

  • So I am gonna go do a cover try.

  • I am in a red dress.

  • It's all looking very promising.

  • Taylor's so great

  • 'Cause she is so low maintenance too.

  • You know,

  • She just shows up.

  • She's totally professional.

  • And I also don't think that a lot of stars have that quality.

  • I mean, she's on time.

  • She knows what she needs to do.

  • And she wants to get it done.

  • And she knows the point of like everything that she does.

  • I used to get really fuzzy about like,

  • oh...that's not that cute...

  • But now I am just going on like

  • put whatever you want on me.

  • Or just do whatever it is that you wanna do my face.

  • You wanna put painted polka dots on it.

  • You can do that.

  • You wanna make my hair big or make it small?

  • Cut it.

  • No, I'm kidding.

  • They don't cut my hair.

  • That's like the one thing that they are not allowed to do.

  • 'Cause the hair is the power source.

  • I am nothing without it.

I'm never gonna forget my first Vogue shoot.
