Do we have to add 'to'?

'to' を付けないと行けないの？

Does it matter? Does it make a difference?

What's the meaning of life?

In this video, we'll answer all of those questions, but, first, we need to focus on the prepositions 'on' and 'in'.

このビデオでは、そういった質問に全て答えます。でもまずは、前置詞の 'on' と 'in' に注目しましょう。

Where is Aly?

アリーはどこ？

He is 'inside' or 'in' the pool.

プールの中（'inside', 'in'）ですね。

Where's Tom?

トムはどこ？

'Outside' or 'out' of the pool.

プールの外（'outside', 'out'）ですね。

Where's the fish?

魚はどこ？

'On' a plate.

皿の上（'on'）です。

Where is my phone?

僕の電話はどこ？

'In' my pocket.

ポケットの中（'in'）です。

So, 'in', 'out', 'off', 'on': they show the location of objects.

'in', 'out' 'off', 'on' は、物の場所を示します。

My phone is 'in' my pocket,

電話はポケットの中（'in'）、

Aly is 'in' the pool.

アリーはプールの中（'in'）、

But, if we talk about movement, 'from off to on', or 'from out to in', then we must add 'to'.

でも、'off' から ’on', 'out' から 'in' のように、動きについて話す時には、'to' を付けなければなりません。

For example: I 'put' a fish 'onto' the plate.

例です。魚をお皿の上に置いた。（'put...onto'）

I 'put' the tweezers 'into' my pocket.

毛抜きをポケットの中に入れた。（'put...into'）

Do I have to add 'to'?

'to' を付けないといけないの？

Couldn't I just say 'I put the fish on a plate', 'I put the phone in my pocket'?

'I put the fish on a plate.', 'I put the phone in my pocket' と言うだけではだめ？

Yes, you could say that!

はい、そう言えます！

But that's why we use 'to', to show movement.

でも、だから、動きを示すためには'to'を使うんです。

Now, be careful, we say 'onto something', but we don't say '"offto" something' - it's just off.

でも気をつけてください。'onto' は使えますが、'offto' はだめです。'offto' は間違いです。

The same with 'into', that's okay, 'outto', no!

'into' でも同じです。'outto' は間違いです！

So, Aly and Tom are peeing.

アリーとトムが、おしっこをしています。

But, where are they peeing?

でも、どこでおしっこをしている？

One of them is peeing 'in' the pool, one of them is peeing 'into' the pool.

1人はプールの中で（'in'）、1人はプールの中に向かって（'into'）していますね。

Did you guess correct?

正しい答えを考えられましたか？

Aly is peeing 'in' the pool because that's his location: He is in the pool.

アリーはプールの中で（'in'）、彼の場所ですね。プールの中にいます。

Tom is peeing 'into' the pool because his pee is going from out to in the pool.

トムはプールの中に向かって（'into'）、彼のおしっこは、プールの外から中に向かっているからです。

I know that was a gross example, but when someone asks you what the difference is, you'll remember.

気持ち悪い例でしたが、違いは何かと聞かれたら、思い出せますよね。
