Hey guys! Hi!!
So today we have a very special guest, Rachel from Rachel and Jun.
And todays topic is basically the comparison of doing different things
in America and Japan
So today we want to talk about driving, drinking, voting, marriage and smoking.
But we should first state that the legal adulthood age in Japan is
20
And in America its 18...
So just from that number alone, you can probably guess that
many of these activities that you can do in America will be at a younger age than in Japan
Okay so the first point that we want to talk about is the driving age
So in America, the driving age is 16
and in Japan its 18
so we want to discuss if that is a good age in Japan, a good age in America
What do you guys think?
Do you think 16 is too young or 18 is too old?
or do you think the driving age should be even older than that
So lets start with America with having a driving age of 16. Why is it so low?
The driving age depends on the state
every state is different and...
a lot of states recently having raising their driving ages
because I know when I got my license
I was able to get my temporary license at 15.5 years old
and my full license the day I turned 16
so I have been driving since I was 15.5 years old
But for my brother and sister, I know that the law was raised for them but that was in Indiana...
I never had a problem driving...
at 16, I never got into any wrecks
so I didn't think it was a problem
and it was helpful for me because I was able to drive myself to school...
or I was able to drive myself to my part time jobs...
or go to my dad's house or visit people...
and when you have a family with multiple kids
and they all want to have jobs or meet with their friends after school
parents don't have the time to drive every kid to every single place, so we kind of need to drive...
but I know that a lot of people have been pushing to raise it
because it is higher in a lot of other parts of the world
I would like to look at the statistics and see how
often younger people crash compared to older people
because then that has to do with experience
How about you, Japan?
I think 18 is the proper age
16 is still considered to be a kid...
still in school...
so 18 is actually graduating from high school in Japan
so it is considered that you are becoming an adult
apart of society
so I feel 18 is actually proper age
compared to 16....16 is too young
in Japan transportation is convenient here
You don't even have a driver's license right?
Yeah I don't even have a driver's license.
She never needed to because she always had a train or bus here
I mean you always had good public transportation...
usually I just walk if its within 30 min
and she was telling me about the driving school
its very expensive in Japan supposedly...
like $3,000 or more right?
yeah around that...
so its really expensive compared to America...
maybe thats another reason why its so high
So the next topic we want to talk about is drinking
So the drinking age in Japan is 20...
and the drinking age in America is 21
which is kind of strange because from driving to drinking there is such a big age gap from 16 to 21
so Rachel, what do you think about the drinking age?
I don't know...
I actually never had an alcoholic drink until I was 21
I just set a rule myself saying I am going to wait until I'm 21
I was one of those weird kids. But I am the only person that I know who actually waited until the drinking age...
I don't know a single person in America...
You did?
Me too me too!
Well I studied abroad in Japan when I was turning 20...
So I technically starting drinking earlier but I was legally drinking in Japan
And then when I went back to America I was 21 so yeah I never drank illegally...
I think it may be better to be younger...
because it has a sense of...
oooo we are not supposed to do this, it is so fun...
so I think people go out of their way to get crazy drunk when their kids...
when they are in high school but if it was legal, maybe they would be used to it already kind of...
and it wouldn't be a big deal like it is in Europe...
Yeah exactly, I think Europe is a good example of that
How about Japan?
If it doesn't hurt your health, I think it can be lower...
Well she loves drinking...so...
So she wishes at what like 14 or 15...
You should live in Europe basically...
Yeah...I would love that...
But in Japan its 20 so...
I am not sure because if you did something wrong then...
you can't take responsibility for it unless you're 20...
maybe thats the reason why its 20...
I would say that most people in America would have their first drink when
they are like 16 or 17...
yeah maybe even before that...
in Japan, what do you think?
University, when you enter university...
I think there are like club activities...
and senpai will let kohai drink
wait wait, club activities meaning sports club right? Not dance club...
and then the senpai will let the kohai drink a lot
whats it called
hazing!
like hazing I think
kind of like you need to do this to prove your loyalty
that you are an actual member of this group
The next one we want to talk about is voting
So the voting age in Japan is 20
and the voting age in America is 18
I don't know. I have never voted
I have never voted yet...
I think that is fine...the age of adulthood
It is so varied like how much people know about politics...
like there are teenagers who are way into it and they know all kinds of stuff
and then there are adults who have never even touched it
so its hard to put an age on it
How about you?
I have never voted so I don't know yet but...
But recently in Japan, they are talking about making it younger
like at 18...
I think because even adult people don't vote in Japan
so there is a problem with politics...
Isn't it like a lot of young people in Japan don't vote
like most of the voters are elderly here...
so I don't think it really matters...
So next one is marriage...
So marriage in Japan is 18 for males and 16 for females...
Depends on the state but usually around 18...
without parental permission
So lets start with America on this one
I kind of actually think that is too young now
in America...
like society has changed so much...
from how it used to be...
people don't usually just get out of high school, get a job and thats the rest of their life...
like marriage and then job...
I feel like 18 now is kind of young...
for people to get married...
But I wouldn't say "no you are not allowed to get married at 18"
so thats kind of tough...
So why do you think Japan is 18 for males and 16 for females?
Well, they are still in high school...
So its kind of young...
But I think back when they set this law...
they are not going to school a long time ago...
Probably for males, 18 is good and 16 is good for females because physically they are ready to have a family...
So I think it was okay back then...but now...
society has changed...and then...
It is kind of too young because...
almost everyone goes to high school
So the age differences has to do with physical development?
Yeah, I mean girls develop quicker then males so...
The difference makes sense...
But I would say girls 18 and boys 20 or something like that...
So raise it a little bit
2 years above at least
And the last one we want to talk about is smoking
In Japan the age is 20
And in America its 18
And I think like in 2 or 3 states it 19...?
but basically 18...
So obviously the smoking age is different. Lets start with America again...
Okay so for smoking...
I can see it being at 18 because that is the age of adulthood
and I would say something like that, just set it at the age of adulthood
but the thing is
Is the age of adulthood at age 18 okay?
Are people's brains developed enough for them to choose if they want to start smoking at 18?
Because we don't stop developing until like our mid-20's...
So thats the one things and then...
And second I would set a recommended age of never...
for smoking...lol
So that one is kind of difficult because you can't...
I wouldn't change it around the age of adulthood
because you should be able to make decisions by yourself...
and if you WANT to smoke then...
Yeah I think it makes sense...
you turn 20 and you are considered to be an adult...
so it makes sense to me but
like Rachel said its not good for your health at all so...
But I don't think people would care
if its 21 or 22
I think people would smoke anyway
And thats one thing, the difference between smoking cigarets and smoking marihuana
Because cigarets are just all around awful for you
But a lot of people really like marihuana now and...
and they say that its like not even as dangerous as alcohol...
and its becoming legal in a lot of states in America...
I have never smoke marihuana before so I really don't know anything about it but...
If its not very dangerous then...
Like I would be more okay with people smoking that than cigarets.
I agree
People would be more chill for sure
Less stress
recently society is so stressful so
people need that
Japanese society...
Very illegal in Japan
Very strict
So I hope this helped you in some way if you are coming to Japan or if you have some kind of interest in Japan
or if you are a Japanese viewer
and you want to go to America and party...
Just interested in this kind of topic
If you are from a different country other than America of Japan
And we obviously didn't talk about, list your opinions
based upon your country
Whether you think your country's laws are too young or too old to do any of these things
And we hoped you guys enjoyed the video
Please check out Rachel and Jun's channel but you probably already know because they are awesome!
