in my hometown of Gabés, in the south of Tunisia,

2012年 ジャラ・モスクのミナレットに 絵を描きました

I never thought that graffiti would bring so much attention to a city.

チュニジア南部の 私の故郷ガベスです

At the beginning, I was just looking for a wall in my hometown,

グラフィティで 故郷が注目されるとは 想像だにしませんでした

and it happened that the minaret was built in '94.

当初は ただ故郷の建物を 探していたのですが

And for 18 years, those 57 meters of concrete stayed grey.

94年に建てられたミナレットを見つけました

When I met the imam for the first time, and I told him what I wanted to do,

18年間も この57メートルの 建物は灰色のままでした

he was like, "Thank God you finally came,"

イマームに最初に会った時 やりたいことを伝えました

and he told me that for years he was waiting for somebody

イマームは こう言いました 「神に感謝しよう やっと来てくれたか」

to do something on it.

何年にもわたって 壁に何か施してくる人を

The most amazing thing about this imam is that he didn't ask me anything --

待っていたそうです

neither a sketch, or what I was going to write.

このイマームの最高に素晴らしいところは 自由に描かせてくれたこと

In every work that I create, I write messages

スケッチを見せてくれとか 何を書くんだとか聞かれませんでした

with my style of calligraffiti -- a mix of calligraphy and graffiti.

私が創り出す作品では メッセージを描きます

I use quotes or poetry.

やり方はカリグラフィティで カリグラフィーとグラフィティを合わせたものです

For the minaret, I thought that the most relevant message

名言や詩を使います

to be put on a mosque should come from the Quran,

ミナレットには モスクという場所に 最もふさわしい

so I picked this verse:

コーランからの 文言を入れようと考えました

"Oh humankind, we have created you from a male and a female,

そこで この一節を選びました

and made you people and tribe, so you may know each other."

「人々よ 我は一人の男と 一人の女から あなた方を創り

It was a universal call for peace, tolerance, and acceptance

民族と部族に分け隔てた 互いを知り合うようにさせるためだ」

coming from the side that we don't usually portray in a good way in the media.

万人への平和、寛容 許しを求めるもので

I was amazed to see how the local community reacted to the painting,

普段 メディアでは伝えられない イスラム教の善い面でしょう

and how it made them proud to see the minaret getting so much attention

現地の方々が 反応してくれたのは 驚きでした

from international press all around the world.

そして世界中のメデイアが ミナレットを取り上げる様子を見て

For the imam, it was not just the painting;

現地の人も誇りに思ってくれました

it was really deeper than that.

イマームにとっては ただの絵ではありません

He hoped that this minaret would become a monument for the city,

もっと深い意味がありました

and attract people to this forgotten place of Tunisia.

このミナレットが街を象徴する 記念碑になればと願いました

The universality of the message,

チュニジアの忘れられた場所に 再び息吹がもたらされればと

the political context of Tunisia at this time,

メッセージの普遍性と

and the fact that I was writing Quran in a graffiti way

現在のチュニジアの政治背景

were not insignificant.

そして グラフィティという 新しい技法でコーランを描くことに

It reunited the community.

意味があったのです

Bringing people, future generations,

現地の人々を再び結びつけました

together through Arabic calligraphy

アラビア語のカリグラフィで

is what I do.

人々や若い世代を集める

Writing messages is the essence of my artwork.

これが私がやっていることです

What is funny, actually, is that even Arabic-speaking people

メッセージを書くのが このアートの本質です

really need to focus a lot to decipher what I'm writing.

面白いのは アラブ語を話す人たちでさえ

You don't need to know the meaning to feel the piece.

私のカリグラフィを 読み解くのに苦労します

I think that Arabic script touches your soul before it reaches your eyes.

でも作品を感じるのに 意味が分からなくても大丈夫

There is a beauty in it that you don't need to translate.

アラビア語は目に訴える前に しっかり魂に響くと思います

Arabic script speaks to anyone, I believe;

意味が分からなくても そこには美しさがあります

to you, to you, to you, to anybody,

アラビア語は万人に訴える そう信じています

and then when you get the meaning,

あなたにも あなたにも あなたにも 全ての人々に

you feel connected to it.

そうして意味が分かれば

I always make sure to write messages

それに繋がることができます

that are relevant to the place where I'm painting,

メッセージを書く時に いつも気をつけているのは

but messages that have a universal dimension,

絵を描く場所に まつわるものであることと

so anybody around the world can connect to it.

万人に訴える内容にすることで

I was born and raised in France, in Paris,

世界中の誰もが 繋がるようにすることです

and I started learning how to write and read Arabic when I was 18.

私はフランスのパリで 生まれ育ちました

Today I only write messages in Arabic.

アラビア語の読み書きを 習い始めたのは18の時です

One of the reasons this is so important to me,

カリグラフィでは アラビア語だけを使います

is because of all the reaction that I've experienced all around the world.

これが私にとって 大切である理由の一つは

In Rio de Janeiro, I translated this Portuguese poem

世界中から受けてきた さまざまな反響です

from Gabriela Tôrres Barbosa,

リオデジャネイロでは ポルトガル語の詩を訳しました

who was giving an homage to the poor people of the favela,

ガブリエラ・トーラス・バルボサの詩で

and then I painted it on the rooftop.

ファヴェーラに住まう 貧困にあえぐ方に捧げたもので

The local community were really intrigued by what I was doing,

これを屋根に描きました

but as soon as I gave them the meaning of the calligraphy,

地元の方々には 私がやっていることに 興味を持っていただきましたが

they thanked me, as they felt connected to the piece.

カリグラフィの意味を 教えるやいなや

In South Africa, in Cape Town,

感謝されました 作品と繋がってもらえたのです

the local community of Philippi

南アフリカのケープタウンで

offered me the only concrete wall of the slum.

フィリピの人たちが 提供してくれたのは

It was a school, and I wrote on it

スラムにある コンクリートの壁だけでした

a quote from Nelson Mandela,

そこは学校で 私が描いたのは

saying, "[in Arabic],"

ネルソン・マンデラの言葉です

which means, "It seems impossible until it's done."

それは [アラビア語]

Then this guy came to me and said, "Man, why you don't write in English?"

「何かをやり遂げるまでは 常にそれが不可能に見える」

and I replied to him, "I would consider your concern legit if you asked me

すると ある人が近づいてきて 「何で英語で書かないんだい？」と

why I didn't write in Zulu."

私はこう答えました 「もしこう尋ねたら ちゃんと答えるよ

In Paris, once, there was this event,

『なぜズールー語で書かないんだい？』」

and someone gave his wall to be painted.

パリで ある催しがあって

And when he saw I was painting in Arabic,

ある人が提供してくれた壁に 描くことになりました

he got so mad -- actually, hysterical -- and he asked for the wall to be erased.

私がアラビア語で描き始めると

I was mad and disappointed.

感情むき出しで怒られました 壁の絵を消すようにと

But a week later, the organizer of the event asked me to come back,

私は憤り 失望しました

and he told me that there was a wall right in front of this guy's house.

１週間後のことです 主催者に戻ってくるようにと頼まれて

So, this guy --

あの男性の家の前に 別の壁があると言うんです

(Laughter)

ですから あの人は―

like, was forced to see it every day.

（笑）

At the beginning, I was going to write, "[In Arabic],"

毎日 グラフィティを 見る羽目になりました

which means, "In your face," but --

最初はこんな言葉を書こうとしました [アラビア語]

(Laughter)

「ざまあみろ」って

I decided to be smarter and I wrote, "[In Arabic],"

（笑）

which means, "Open your heart."

でも大人になろうと思って こうしました [アラビア語]

I'm really proud of my culture,

「心を開きなさい」という意味です

and I'm trying to be an ambassador of it through my artwork.

自分の文化に誇りを持っています

And I hope that I can break the stereotypes we all know,

私が生み出す作品を通して それを伝えようとしています

with the beauty of Arabic script.

そして私たちの誰もが持ちうる ステレオタイプを

Today, I don't write the translation of the message anymore on the wall.

アラビア語の美しさで壊したい

I don't want the poetry of the calligraphy to be broken,

今ではアラビア語のメッセージを 壁に描きません

as it's art and you can appreciate it without knowing the meaning,

カリグラフィの詩が 壊れて欲しくないのです

as you can enjoy any music from other countries.

これは芸術であって 意味が分からずとも大切にし

Some people see that as a rejection or a closed door,

違う国の音楽のように 楽しんで欲しいからです

but for me, it's more an invitation --

拒否しているとか 扉が閉ざされたと 思われる方もいるかもしれませんが

to my language, to my culture, and to my art.

私にとっては 私の言葉
