Welcome back for another free video lesson This week we're going to talk about something that a lot of people have trouble with you might already know that ‘Much’ is used for UNcountable nouns for example liquids Like orange juice Or milk And we use ‘Many’ for countable nouns Like cookies Or bananas So what’s the difference between Countable and uncountable nouns? Can I put an ‘S’ at the end of the word milk? (milks) No. if you cannot put a number in front of a noun For example, ‘Money’ It is UNcountable You CAN NOT say ‘Two Monies’ A Countable noun is a noun you can count In other words, a noun you can put a number in front of. For example, there are FOUR BANANAS. Much = Uncountable nouns (milk, money) Many = Countable nouns (cookies, bananas) So when we ask someone how much or how many we have to remember if we're talking about a countable or uncountable noun But what about statements? Does it sound native to use the words ‘Much’ or ‘Many’ in a statement? Check this out I am MISTER COOL I have MANY friends on the FACEBOOK I have MUCH money One thousand two hundred twenty three! In MANY different currencies I have MANY MANY hats I have MANY dollars, MANY MANY dollars MANY hand-painted hats I have MANY MANY MANY Euros, look how many Euros One THOUSAND Korean (two dollars) I eat MUCH MUCH good food MANY MANY Korean WON I have MUCH protein I have MANY… five… dollars Canadian I drink MUCH coffee Brazilian money – uh, two. And the best of all, I drink MUCH MUCH milk I have MANY MANY shoes And MANY MANY socks MORE than enough for EVERY pair of shoes It’s not incorrect to use ‘Much’ or ‘Many’ in positive statements BUT it DOES NOT SOUND NATIVE Native speakers almost never say much or many in a positive statement So what DO we say? You can use ‘A lot’ for countable AND uncountable nouns If you noticed, I’m not saying A lot ‘oF’ (with the F sound) I’m saying ‘Alodda’ (American Pronunciation) I have ‘alodda’ money (uncountable) I have ‘alodda’ friends (countable) I have ‘alodda’ problems (countable) So let’s try answering some questions How many hats do I have? ‘Alodda’ hats (A lot of hats) How many friends do I have on Facebook? ‘Alodda’ friends.
