My dad is kind of a larger-than-life character, super tough.
He was a body builder when I was a little kid,
so there were all these muscle-heads walking around all the time.
If I got a scrape on my knee,
he'd be like "Yeah! That's gonna put hair on your chest."
When I was real small, my dad just put a harness on me, tied me into a rope,
and dragged me up a rock outside of our house.
By the time I was fourteen or fifteen I started to notice that
there were climbs that I could do that my dad couldn't.
[Tommy's Dad] When he was sixteen, we decided to go to the world climbing championships
When he got to the point where the passed the high point of anybody else,
I was shaking so hard I dropped the camera and did not get a picture of him topping out.
He won the world championship, and so all of his heroes were getting his autograph!
And by then he was so far beyond me that he was over the horizon.
[Tommy] My life ambition for the last five years has been
to free climb The Dawn Wall in Yosemite Valley.
It was a sort of thing that climbers would look at and think
that there was no way it could ever be free climbed
[Tommy's Dad] More or less, about the five hardest big-wall free-climbs in the world are all Tommy's achievements.
And this climb is vastly harder than the hardest of those.
[Tommy] The Dawn Wall is the blankest continuously-steep granite wall of its size in North America.
[Tommy's Dad] Attempting this thing is outer space: it's silly hard.
[Tommy] At first it was just about me. I thought I could do it on my own,
but now I realize that I need other people to share in the pain and share in the excitement
and share in the hitting walls and all that stuff before I'm actually gonna succeed.
[Tommy's Mother] "This obsession is a curious thing.
Sometimes I wonder about the merits of devoting so much of myself to a singular climbing objective.
Much of the time it beats me down, and leaves me hanging my head in despair,
but then there are the moments that bring me to life.
When excitement wells up inside my chest in a way that doesn't happen in everyday life.
Today my fingertips were cracked and bleeding,
I made no progress despite great conditions,
and now I'm on the ground and can hardly contain my excitement to get back on the wall."
[Tommy] Facebook is my venue to tell my own little story of struggle.
I've had people be like, "Man, I work an office job," and begged me to keep doing this.
[Tommy's Dad] I really look at those pictures to get a sense of does he look really upbeat or does he look tired?
[Tommy] My superhero was my dad. I really looked up to him a lot,
and he showed me this incredibly fulfilling way to live.
[Tommy's Dad, in video] Ok, now next to it with your right hand. Come on! You can do it! Good!
[Tommy] And it's great to be able to share that and to inspire other people.
You know, we have all these perceived ideas of where our boundaries are,
and maybe those are completely wrong.
It makes you start to wonder, what else is possible?
