  • Good morning, it's about 8:30 a.m. Right now and I'm out in toy oma and I'm about to go out and visit a shammy sen shop that I've never actually been to before.

  • Can you see the excitement on my face?

  • The gentleman mr Hamedani has actually agreed to open up the shop early for us today so we can get in without any other people.

  • Yes, right up here, but she just gives it away.

  • I always feel kind of special rolling up on a shop when the shutters are still closed and I think it's the shot, you know what we're gonna something weirdly exciting about this.

  • Mm hmm, mm hmm, mm hmm.

  • This shop's name is doc area and this is Mr Hammond.

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you for today.

  • Thank you.

  • Mr Hamedani here actually speaks a little bit of english but mostly through email.

  • So today we're going to speak mostly japanese with each other.

  • You know, one of the reasons that I actually fell in love with this shop is because they have affordable, Let me show you this affordable shamisen for begin.

  • They're kind of like shamisen there.

  • Let me just have mr Hamilton, you show us.

  • So a real full size shamisen.

  • Like this one here, a cheap one can start at like $2 or $3,000 and they can go up to 10,000 20,000 depending on the wood used for the neck because the wood used for the neck is basically petrified.

  • It's a very rare wood.

  • It's very hard And so they created these, the thing that brought me to this shop to begin with is that this shop actually started as a school.

  • It was, it wasn't meant to be a shop initially and then they made the super affordable shammy sen for beginners just made it so that somebody who had 50 60 bucks could just, we made a video of these where we compared it, we called it $100 to me send versus I think it was like a $20,000 to me sent and everyone was like $100 for cardboard and I can understand that but that's handmade, fully packed and shipped overseas for if you were to buy it in the country, it's like 60 bucks.

  • But this book right here, this book is actually a guide, basically all the basics on playing shamisen from how to hold it and the different parts of the shamisen and tuning.

  • And if you've been following along with the shamisen side of things, you'll know that kiki, the shamisen players that I work with have been working really hard on their online shamisen lessons.

  • And when we found this book and when we found a Kia were like, oh we absolutely have to meet them and I'm going to help out by doing the final check for an english translated version when it's available, I'll link it and actually since the shammy sen lessons that kiki are working on are already available.

  • I will link them also, I really want to ask about this shammy sen here because while it looks like there's an amp right there, this is not, I have questions.

  • I have definite questions about this there, this is regular pastrami sandwich.

  • What is this?

  • Michael?

  • What amazon has done here is he's added something called salary, which is basically a buzzing noise that creates a background sound in the shamisen.

  • This being at Subaru Jamison has a salary attached to it so you can see the difference.

  • Let's take a look at how it sounds, wow.

  • And that buzzing background sound gives it more of a feel.

  • Okay, we're not.

  • So you've got guilt.

  • Hi, we've got to be mm hmm.

  • Thank you.

  • Welcome.

  • Thanks to meet you.

  • Welcome.

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you.

  • What's up?

  • All right, I still have my backpack on.

  • I haven't even taken it off.

  • Just came in and started having fun here occurring hurry.

  • Thank you.

  • It really, really feels like a shammy set.

  • It's super small.

  • It's super light.

  • But the positioning is really, this is amazing.

  • What are the equal of it's called?

  • It's about $450 for this, wow.

  • Yeah, we don't cure none of the victims.

  • So the top layer of wood here is actually the same wood that's used in high and shami said that is so cool.

  • Gonna give us a bit of a peek at their workshop space and take off.

  • Come on, go for that.

  • Oh God.

  • Like when you call, you don't like your toasted Mhm And also we have to button and I'm gonna get off.

  • Mhm These are the same machines that you would have seen if you watched the video of my shamisen being built, I will link that up above, but I've actually never sat down and listened to a live Cokie performance.

  • So I think before we wrap up today we're going to have to we're gonna have to do that.

  • That's it.

  • What's this?

  • It's going good.

  • Hi, this is a more traditional one and this is one of the luckiest creation.

  • Mhm I've never gotten to hear Cokie that close before, so that was amazing.

  • And what I'm gonna do is I'm going to leave an unedited version at the end if you want to check it out.

  • Okay, this has been super fun, but the shop is going to open in like 10 minutes so I don't want to take up any more of their time if you're interested in learning shammy sen, knowing more about shammy sen, I will have a link to a playlist of videos where you can do lessons, basically.

  • Anything you want to know will either be linked at the end of this video or in the description box and now I'm gonna sit down and have a meeting with Mr Hamedani here and talk about ways that we can put together some more affordable to share with you guys again, it's all length, it isn't so if you ever have a chance to come to Takayama, this place is beautiful.

  • Just just google Toyota and look at the alps in the mountains and now you can come out and do and stuff as well, so.

  • Oh!

  • Ah, ah, mm hmm.

  • Mhm.

  • Okay.

  • Oh, okay.

  • Mhm, mm hmm, mm hmm.

  • Ah.

Good morning, it's about 8:30 a.m. Right now and I'm out in toy oma and I'm about to go out and visit a shammy sen shop that I've never actually been to before.
