2 人は貧しくも、穏やかでつつましい人物でした。

It was the New Year's Eve.

ある大みそかの夜のこと。

They were too poor to buy a rice cake for the New Year's Day, so they decided to make straw hats and sell them in the town.

貧しさのため、新年のお餅を買うこともできなかったので、2 人は藁(わら)で笠を作り、町で売ることにしました。

"So, I'm off.", said the old man. "Take care now."

「じゃ、行ってくるよ」とおじいさん。「気をつけてね」

The elderly man had been walking around the town on the New Year's Eve saying,

おじいさんは大みそかの夜、こう言いながら町中を歩き回りました。

"Don't you want a hat? Don't you need a hat?"

「笠はいらんかね？笠はいらんかね？」

However, no one bought a hat, probably because times were bad.

けれども、笠を買う人は誰もいません。たぶん、時期が悪かったのでしょう。

"That's pity... she also helped me to make them. She will be sad."

「残念だな…。ばあさんも笠を作るのを手伝ってくれたのに。悲しむだろうなぁ。」

On the way back, the snow started falling.

帰ってくる途中、雪が降り始めました。

そして、おじいさんが山道に着く頃には吹雪になってしまいました。

He happened to find six statues of Child Gods at the roadside.

おじいさんは、道沿いに 6 体のお地蔵さまが並んでいるのを偶然見つけます。

"Alas. You must be freezing without even hats on in such a snowstorm.

「なんと、こんな吹雪の中で笠もなくて、さぞかし寒かろう。

Here you are.

さぁ、これを。

At least keep snow away with these hats," said the old man and put a hat on each statue of a Child God.

この笠があれば少なくとも雪よけになるだろう。」おじいさんはそう言って、それぞれのお地蔵さまに笠をかぶせてあげます。

"Oh, no. I only have five hats."

「あれま。笠が 5 つしかない。」

There were six statues. He was one short.

お地蔵さまは 6 体。笠が 1 つ足りません。

He, then, placed his Japanese towel around the face of the God Child.

そこでおじいさんは、自分の手ぬぐいをお地蔵さまにかぶせてあげました。

Although he had sold nothing, he felt good and satisfied.

笠は 1 つも売れませんでしたが、おじいさんは満たされた気持ちになりました。

He started walking to home.

そして、家へと帰って行ったのです。

"Welcome back! You must be freezing. Please warm up. Um? Where are those hats?" asked the old woman, when the old man got home.

おじいさんが帰宅すると、「お帰りなさい。寒かったでしょう。体を温めてくださいな。あら、笠はどうしたんですか？」とおばあさんは尋ねました。

"I am sorry. Any single hat wasn't sold. But I gave them to the Child Gods.

「ごめんよ。笠は 1 つも売れなかったんだ。でも、お地蔵さまたちにあげてきたよ。

The statues were standing in such a snowstorm. I could not ignore that."

こんな吹雪の中にいたもんだから、そのままにできなくてね。」

"Wow, you did a good thing. I am proud of you.

「まぁ、それは良いことをしましたね。立派ですよ。

We don't need a rice cake.

お餅はなくてもいいじゃありませんか。

We can make New Year's great with hot water and pickles.

白湯とお漬物があれば良いお正月が迎えられますよ。

If you helped the Child Gods, that was greater than selling hats."

お地蔵さまをお助けになったんです。笠を売ることより素晴らしいですよ。」

They both were delighted and went to sleep.

2 人とも朗らかな気持ちで眠りにつきました。

Then, the next day was the New Year's.

そして、あくる日のお正月。

The snowstorm stopped during the night.

吹雪は夜のうちおさまりました。

Now, bright sun shone on the snow.

まぶしいお日様の光が雪を照らし、

The light of the sparkling snow poured through the window.

雪に反射した光がきらきらと窓から差し込みます。

What a beautiful day thought the elderly man and woman.

おじいさんと、おばあさんは、なんて素晴らしい日だろうと思いました。

They noticed that it is somehow lively outside.

2 人は、何やら外が賑やかなことに気づきます。

They heard merry songs.

陽気な歌声が聞こえ、

It seemed many people were having a lot of fun there.

外でたくさんの人がワイワイやっているようでした。

As they went out to see what was happening, they saw piled rice cake, ornaments and delicious food and snacks for the New Year's.

何が起きているのだろうと 2 人が外に出ると、米俵や、お正月用の飾りや食べ物が目に留まりました。

"Whoopee! What could it be!"

「あれま～！なんでこんなことが？」

Then, they saw six statues of Child Gods were going back the way.

すると 2 人は、6 体のお地蔵さまが去っていくのを目にします。

The statues turned around and waved their hands with a smile.

お地蔵さまたちは振り返り、笑顔で手を振ってくれました。

"Now I understand. The Child Gods came to give you thank-you' presents!"

「分かりましたよ。お地蔵さまたちはおじいさんに、お礼の贈り物を届けに来てくださったんですよ！」

"Dear, we can finally have an excellent New Year."

「おばあさん、これで最高のお正月が過ごせるよ。」

Both the old man and woman looked at the Child Gods leaving, and put their hands together. The end.

おじいさんとおばあさんは、手を合わせながら、お地蔵さまが去っていくのを見つめました。
