One informs the other.

一方は他方に繋がります

And I think the problem with humanity is that,

The life part of the equation is not respected

「生」の部分があるべき姿で尊重されていないことだと

the way it should be.

私は思います

Human beings still now, are incredibly destructive and disrespectful

現代においても人は貴重で、個性的で、大切な生命に対して

of how precious and unique and how fragile life is.

時に破壊的で軽視することがあります

People keep on saying after every major war...

主たる戦争が起こるたびに人々はこう言います

'Never again, we can never let this happen again.'

「二度とこのようなことは起こしてはならない」

And of course.

そしてもちろん

In another country, in another part of the world.

また別の国で、世界の別の場所で

It happens again.

それは繰り返されます

You feel a disillusionment about that, or I have.

あなたはそれについて幻滅するでしょうか

But within that whole pathos, that darkness

その全ての悲しみや暗闇の中で

there's always individual people who choose peace

紛争よりも平和を選ぶ人々が

over conflict.

常に存在します

They are the light, and the spirits.

彼らは希望であり、魂です

The true heroes of the world.

世界の真の英雄たちです

When I was young I would really get angry about the way the world was,

私は若い頃、世界のあり方に疑問を感じていました

and about people who were suffering when they really didn't need to suffer.

本来苦しむ必要が無い人々が苦しんでいる世の中に辟易しました

And photography was kind of a way of me channeling that anger

そして、写真は私がその怒りをより建設的なものに向ける

into something that was more constructive.

一つの手段でした

Telling the stories of those vulnerable people.

それらの脆弱な人々の物語を語る

In the hope of building some sort of bridge of understanding.

それが何らかの理解への架け橋となることを願って

Being in war zones for ten years took it's toll.

10年間、戦争地帯に身を置くことは普通ではありません

I had cronic nightmares for years and years,

何年にもわたって慢性的な悪夢があり

waking up in the middle of the night and being

真夜中に汗だくで目を覚まし

terrified and sweating and screaming.

恐怖を感じて悲鳴をあげていました

With all the death that I've seen

沢山の「死」と向き合って

it's a confirmation of your own mortality.

自分にもいつかそれが訪れることを実感しました

I'm probably in the last chapter of my life.

自分はおそらく人生の後半に差し掛かっている

You start thinking about death.

そうやって「死」について考え始めます

And being in Nepal, it's really interesting just seeing the way

ネパールでは人々の「死」との向き合い方が興味深く

that they've weaved it, not only into their own spirituality, their own religion

彼らが霊性や宗教だけでなく、日常生活にまで

but into their daily lives.

「死」が根付いた生き方を見ることが出来ます

This is the only one place in Nepal where you can see

ここはネパールで唯一、生と死を一度に

life and death together.

見られる場所です

Hindus believe that this is not our final life.

ヒンズー教徒は、現世のみで人生が終わると考えていません

When you see their burning dead bodies you can see 5 elements together.

彼らの火葬には宇宙を構成する5大要素が含まれます

First they light dead body.

まず遺体に着火します

That's fire.

これは「火」です

Fire goes back to fire.

火は火に還ります

Smoke rises up with the help of air.

煙は「風」の助けを借りて上昇します

And the cloud it takes form of sky.

そして「空」で雲の形を作るのです

All the ashes they're swept into the river right after cremation...Water.

火葬直後にはすべての灰を川に流します...これが「水」

And the small pieces of bone gets to the earth, back to five different elements.

そして小さな骨片が「地」に還ります。これで5大要素です

Then persons gonna have another life.

そうして人は生まれ変わるのです

A photographer making pictures of that if it's done in a respectful way,

写真家は敬意を持って行動するべきで

and if you've asked and it's fine for you to be there,

きちんと尋ねて、同意を得られたなら

they're absolutely at one with it.

彼らも協力的になってくれます

Taking photograph it is not considered to be taboo because,

写真を撮ることは、タブーとは見なされていません

you are learning something from death as well.

なぜなら「死」から学ぼうとしているからです

Death is part of our life.

死は私たちの生活の一部です

When you're in these intimate situations I find with Fuji cameras,

このような繊細な状況で富士フイルムのカメラは

especially a camera like the X-T4 is that it's so small.

特にX-T4のようなカメラはとても小さく

It's not imposing.

負担が少なく

You can float with it.

共に漂うことが出来ます

What I really love about it, is the film simulation.

私はフィルム・シミュレーションが気に入っています

And one that I've been using which is new, is the bleach bypass.

そして今回の撮影で使用したのは新しいブリーチ・バイパスです

The colour is not too saturated or overstated.

色が飽和しすぎたり、誇張されたりすることがありません

That for me is what I want because in documentary photography

それは私が必要とする表現で、なぜならドキュメンタリー写真というのは

it's reality that you're photographing. It's unguarded moments of humanity

現実を写すものだからです。経年して流れる中での人々の

in it's ebbing and flowing.

無防備な姿をです

The things that made me angry when I was young

私が若い頃に疑問を感じた原因は今も続いてます

they're still going on. It's the same stupid dance but

思考の堂々巡りで馬鹿馬鹿しいですが

I don't think hope has been snuffed out.

希望が失われたとは思っていません

Hope is all that we have left.

私たちには希望しか残されていません

And it's those individual people, many of them who I have documented,

私がこれまでに撮影してきた、その一人一人が

that hold life up as something that's extraordinarily precious

貴重で愛されるべき人生を一生懸命生きています

and should be loved, you know?

そう思います

And enjoyed until it ends.

そしてそれが終わるまで楽しむべきです

Love is God.

愛は神なり

God is Love.

神は愛なり
