I know the definition of success, but I can't tell you what it is.

The meaning of success is unique to each and every person.

成功が意味するものは、人それぞれ異なる。

Some people want sports cars, some people want money, some people want love, some people just want less stress.

スポーツカーを欲しいと思う人もいれば、お金が欲しい人、愛が欲しい人がいる。とにかくストレスを軽減させたいという人もいるだろう。

There's successful people who work on Wall Street and make lots of money.

ウォールストリートで働き、大金を稼ぐ成功者もいる。

There's successful people who live in small remote villages who fish all day long, and they are living their dreams.

片田舎の小さな村に暮らし、1日中釣りをして過ごし、自分の夢を実現させる成功者もいる。

Most people don't know what their definition of success is.

ほとんどの人は、自分たちにとっての成功とは何かを知らないのだ。

That's why they have so much uncertainty.

だから、予測できないことが山ほどある。

That's why they get caught up in trivial things.

だから、ちっぽけなことで足踏みしてしまう。

If you haven't thought about it yet, you have to devote an entire day to just sit down and think: "What do I really want out of life?".

そんなこと考えたこともないというなら、1 日じっくり考えるべきだ。「自分が真に人生に求めているものは何なのか？」

It sounds simple, but most people just don't do it.

シンプルに聞こえるかもしれない。だが、それを実行する人はほとんどいない。

They don't have the guts to admit what they really want to do and what they really want.

みんな、認める勇気がないのだ。本当にしたいことを。本当に欲しいものを。

And I mean seriously and realistically listing what you want.

真剣に、現実的に自分が何を求めているのかをリストアップするのだ。

Don't say, "I wanna to be rich."

「金持ちになりたい」などと言ってほしくない。

That doesn't mean anything.

そこには何の意味もない。

Rich could mean earning a ton of money but working 80-hour weeks.

裕福とは、たくさんのお金を稼いでいるという意味にもなるが、週に 80 時間働くことになるかもしれない。

That's probably not actually rich because you're working too damn much.

それはおそらく、本当の意味で豊かであるとは言えないだろう。働きすぎだからだ。

Rich could mean something completely different.

豊かであるということは何かまったく違うものを意味するだろう。

Like owning a really big comic book collection.

例えば、ものすごいコミックブックのコレクションを所有しているとか。

Both people are rich right?

そういう人もリッチだよね？

They have a lot of assets?

多くの財産を持っているんだから。

You're going to have to do some deep soul searching.

みんな、もっと深く自分探しをしなければいけない。

You have to try new things.

新たなことに挑戦しなければならない。

You have to fail.

失敗も必要だ。

You have to meet people who are doing what you want to be doing and ask them what it's really like.

自分がしたいことをしている人に会って、どのようなものか聞くべきだろう。

There's a million questions to ask yourself.

自分に問いかけるべきことが無数にあるはずだ。

The most important question is, "What would life be like if I didn't have this dream come true?".

1 番重要なのは、「もし自分の夢をかなえることができなかったら、どんな人生になるだろうか？」という問いかけだ。

What would life be like if you didn't get that really big comic book collection?

どんな人生になる？もし、そのコミックブックのコレクションを手にしていなかったら？

I'm kind of joking, but it's true: you need to think about the results and consequences.

ちょっとふざけてるみたいだけど、本当のことだ。自分の言動の結果、自分の言動が何をもたらすのか、考える必要がある。

And I'm telling you this because your goals might require bigger actions than you think.

なぜこんなことを言うのかというと、目標を達成するには、想像以上に大きな行動を起こさなければいけないこともあるからだ。

Do you need to move to another city or even another country to achieve your goals?

目標を達成するために、違う街に引っ越したり、他の国に行く必要があるだろうか？

Sometimes it matters a lot.

それが大きな違いをもたらすこともある。

Do you need to quit you job to ultimately be happy?

自分の最終的な幸せのために、仕事を辞める必要があるだろうか？

See, this is why I never believed in asking other people for advice.

そう。だから私は他人にアドバイスを求めるという行為を信じない。

Because who can really know what's good for you?

だって、自分にとって何が良いのかを本当に知りうるのは誰なんだ？

Only you.

自分だけだろう。

Nobody knows how important certain things are to you.

自分にとって何がどれほど重要かなんて、他の誰も知らない。

Some people will even reject it.

それを認めない人もいるだろう。

They'll tell you not to do things, especially if they are radically different.

やめるように言ってくるだろう。自分とは根本的に違うタイプの人間の場合は特にだ。

Sometimes they might be jealous, but the truth is, they don't think it's right for them.

嫉妬する人もいるかもしれない。だが、実際のところそういった人たちは、彼ら自身に合っていないと考えているのだ。

Success is serious.

成功とは妥協のないものだ。

This is what drives you.

それが原動力なのだ。

This is why you wake up in the morning.

だからみんな、朝 目を覚ます。

This is why you go to work every day.

だからみんな、毎日仕事にでかけていく。

This is important.

成功とは重要なもの。

That's why you need to take the time to focus and figure out what it means to you.

だから、きちんと時間を割いて、自分にとって成功とは何なのかということに着目し、見極める必要があるのだ。

And just because you've done it once doesn't mean you're done.

ただし、1 度そうしたことがあるからといって、それで終わりということではない。

You have to reevaluate the meaning of success periodically.

成功が意味するものを、定期的に見つめ直さなければならない。

Like every few years.

数年おきくらいの頻度で。

Because your values will change.

その理由は、価値観というものは変化するからだ。

What's your meaning of success going to be like after you finish school?

成功というものに対する認識は、社会人になったらどんなものになっているだろうか？

After you get married?

結婚したら？

After you retire?

退職したら？

It's always going to change.

いつだって変わり続ける。

But that's okay.

でも、それでいい。
