He made his living by going out to the sea in his rowboat every day to catch fish.

毎日、ふねを　こぎ、うみに　でては、 さかなを　とって　くらして　おりました。

But one day when Taro went out to sea, he couldn't catch any fish.

ある日、いつもの　ように　うみへ　でましたが、 さっぱり　つれません。

So he quit early and went back to shore.

あきらめて、その日は、早く、 はまに　かえって　くると・・・・・・。

There he found some village children making a commotion.

村の　子どもが わいわい　さわいで　いました。

Going closer,

ちかづいて　みると、 こがめが　ぐったりと　して　いました。

he saw a baby turtle exhausted by the children's torment.

あっちいけ！

Get out of here!

なぜか　そのとき、

Taro took pity on the poor little turtle.

こがめが　かわいそうになった うらしま　たろうは、

He took the baby turtle home and nursed it back to health.

こがめを　いえに　つれて　かえり、 かんびょう　して　あげました。

The next day the baby turtle was fine, so Taro released it back into the sea where it swam happily away and disappeared.

よくじつ、すっかり　元気に　なった こがめを　うみへ　はなすと、

A few days later when Taro was fishing as usual...

元気よく　およいで やがて、見えなく　なりました。

Mr. Urashima, Mr. Urashima Taro,

それから、いく日か　すぎた　ある日。

He heard a voice calling his name.

いつもの　ように りょうを　していると・・・・。

Urashima Taro throught it strange to hear a voice way out at sea,

うらしまさん！　うらしま　たろうさん！

but then he heard his name called again and the sound was coming from the water.

と、よぶ　こえが、きこえます。

I am a messenger from the Dragon king of the Sea.

こんな　うみの　まんなかで　だれだろうと、 ふしぎに　おもって　いると

The baby turtle you saved was from the palace of the Sea Dragon.

『うらしまさん、うらしま　たろうさん』と、 また　きこえます。

I will take you there to repay you for your kindness. Get on my back.

こえは、うみの　中から　して　いたのです。

Urashima Taro did as he was told and got onto the turtle's back.

わたしは、りゅうじんさまの　つかいです。

Welcome to the Palace of the Sea Dragon.

あなたに　たすけて　いただいた　かめは、 りゅうぐうじょうの　ものでした。

My name is Otohime, I am the turtle you saved the other day.

おれいに、りゅうぐうじょうへ　おつれします。

That turtle he rescued had become this beautiful princess.

どうぞ　わたしの　せなかへ　おのりください。

Urashima Taro was astounded.

うらしま　たろうは、かめに　いわれる　まま、 せなかに　のりました。

Please come this way. My father wishes to thank you himself.

ようこそ　りゅうぐうじょうへ・・・・。

Welcome, Master Urashima.

おとひめと　もうします。

Thank you for saving my daughter.

せんじつ　たすけて　いただいた　かめは、 わたくしで　ございます。

You may enjoy yourself here as long as you please.

そとの　せかいを　しりたくて、 かめに　すがたを　かえて　でかけたのです。

Urashima Taro was treated to a fabulous reception,

あの　かめが、 うつくしい　おひめさまだったとは・・・。

and the mysterious day was over.

うらしま　たろうは　おどろく　ばかりです。

Each day was like a dream. Then one day...

さあ、こちらへ・・・・。 ちちも　おれいを　もうしあげたいと・・・・。

This is a room where one forgets time.

よう　まいられた　うらしまどの・・・・。

Urashima Taro was taken to a special room.

むすめを　たすけて　くれて　ありがとう。

In this room one can quickly spend an enjoyable year.

ここで、ゆっくりと　たのしまれると よかろう・・・・。

But don't use it too much as there is no way to turn time back,

うらしまたろうは、

Have fun, but be careful.

たいそう　ごうかな　もてなしを　うけ、 ふしぎな　一日が　おわりました。

Urashima Taro forgot all about the passage of time.

ゆめの　ような　毎日が つづいた　ある日・・・・・。

He enjoyed himself in the room of time again and again.

ここは、ときを　わすれてしまう　へやです。

Nevertheless, eventually he remembered his other life above the sea.

と、ある　へやへ　あんない　されました。

The next day he asked about going home.

ここでは、一年を　みじかい　じかんで たのしむ　ことが　できるのです。

Don't talk about that. Just live here and have fun.

でも、つかいすぎると、 とりかえしの　つかない　ことに　なります

Otohime was overcome with sadness.

お気をつけ　あそばせ！

But she couldn't stop him. Urashima Taro's mind was made up.

うらしま　たろうは、ときの　すぎるのを　わすれ そのあいだ、

Then it can't be helped.

ときの　へやを なんども　なんども　たのしんだのです。

Take this as a memento.

いくら　たのしくても、じぶんのくらしを おもい　おこすときが　やって　きました。

With it you can come back to the Palace of the Sea.

よくあさ、その　ことを　うちあけると・・・。

But you must never, ever open the lid in your world. Never!

そんな　こと、いわないで ここで　たのしく　くらしましょう・・・・。

And so, as he had come.

と、たいそう　かなしみました。

Urashima Taro once again got on the turtle's back,

おとひめが、どんなに　ひきとめても、 うらしま　たろうの　きもちは　かわりません。

and left the Palace of the Sea Dragon.

しかたありませんね。

Urashima Taro went back to the village he missed so much.

おもいでの　しるしに これを　おもち　ください。

The village however, had changed.

これが　あれば　また、 りゅうぐうじょうへ　こられます。

Where his house had been was now a big field with big trees and over grown weeds.

でも、あなたの　せかいでは、 ふたを　あけては　なりません！　ぜったいに!!

And the villagers were all people he didn't know.

うらしま　たろうは、 きた　ときと　おなじように、

As Urashima Taro hung around aimlessly...

かめに　のり、りゅうぐうじょうに わかれを　つげました。

Young man, is something wrong?

うらしまたろうは、 なつかしい　村へ　もどって　きました。

Do you know the house that was here?

ところが、村の　けしきが　ちがいます。

Ah, yes, There used to be a deserted old house...

いえが　あった　ところは、大きな　木や 草ぼうぼうの　はらっぱに　なって　いました。

But that was long ago.

村の　人びとも　しらない　人たちばかりです。

Long ago...?

うらしま　たろうが　おろおろして　いると、

Then Urashima Taro knew that what seemed like months at the Palace of the Sea Dragon.

おわかいの　どうか　されたかの？

had passed as decades or even centuries here in the village.

ここに　あった　いえを　しりませんか？

Forgetting Otohime's warning never to open the box.....

あぁ、だれも　住んでおらん ふるい　いえが　あったか・・・・。

Instantly, Urashima Taro's hair was gone and he changed into a withered old man with a bent back.

もう、ずっと　むかしの　はなしじゃ・・・・。

No longer having any place where he belonged, Urashima Taro just disappeared.

ずぅっと　むかし?!

Some say he turned into a crane and flew off somewhere but that is another story.

なんと　いう　ことでしょう！
