what happens in a year?

A year ago at this time, "Avengers: Endgame" came out.

-It's crazy.

-Isn't that wild?

-It's -- it's hard to believe. -How fast everything changes.

It's the biggest movie in the entire world

and remember I had a question for you that I didn't ask

when you were on last time, but there was a rumor that

you didn't want to take the role of the Hulk at first.

And there was -- was that true? I don't know.

-I was -- I was scared.

I didn't know what I would --

could add to what I'd already

thought had been done so well before me.

And I just was like -- I don't know that I'm --

and I'd only been doing indie movies up to that point.

So I was like, I don't know, like,

I don't know if I'm the right person for this.

And Joss Whedon's like, "Yeah, you are the right person."

And then, I got a call from Downey who --

it must've made it to him that I was, you know --

-Waffling? -Yeah.

-Hemming and hawing and he just simply said,

"Ruffalo, let's go. We got this."

And in true Iron Man fashion.

And then after that, I was like, I guess I have to do it.

But, you know, the big thing was is I wanted to read a script

and they don't give you scripts.

And so, I made a promise when I was a young actor

that I would never do another movie without reading a script

beforehand because it's a recipe for disaster.

And then you get stuck in something.

Our only power as a young actor

is our ability to say no sometimes.

-That's true.

-And so, I was like, "I need to read something."

And the studio's like, "Sorry, we don't give anything out."

And Whedon's was like, Joss, God bless him, man.

He's like, "Hey, man, here's like 20 pages

of what I have written of Banner."

And I read that first scene when Scarlett --

when Black Widow finds Banner in India and I was like,

"Okay, I love this. This is amazing."

-Really?

-And it was different, you know?

Oh, okay, I think I could do -- this is humorous

and it's kind of playful

and I think I could do something with it.

-At this point, I could see no one else doing it.

It was just so perfect and so -- I know it's bizarre to even say,

but I'm almost comfortable with you being the Hulk.

Even in the last one where it's like Hulk/human like --

I was like, oh, yeah, that's great, it's hilarious.

Like, my brain it's almost like a deep meditation

where you're just like in the zone.

I'm like, oh, yeah, that happens.

He's at a diner, he's taking pictures with kids,

that's cool, like, wait, what?

Like, my brain was tricked.

You're just now -- that's it.

-And then we got there, I mean, literally, like,

that should've been its own movie.

That's what I'm pitching, actually,

that -- that section of time,

like, how did Banner become the Bulk, you know?

-Yeah! -Half human, half Hulk.

How did he become the Bulk? -[ Laughs ]
