  • Reduce the things you eat the days before and after so you deserve this food.

  • Aaaah, that's it. - Ta da. - Wow.

  • The camera just moved. Hey guys on Ask Japanese, it's Cathy Cat.

  • This time we're asking Japanese people to react to American food.

  • We got some tasty pictures that we're gonna show them and we wanna find out what their very

  • first reactions are to when they see these pictures. And what does that actually say

  • about Japanese people and their relationship to food because that

  • was a very interesting thing that we figured out while we did this video. Now

  • before we head on, don't forget subscribe, hit the notification bell so you don't miss future videos and give us a like

  • to say thanks. So let's head of to the streets of Tokyo and ask Japanese people to react

  • to American food.

  • What image do you hold in your mind of American food? - High calorie

  • Why so? - Mainly chewy things like bread and meat.

  • "High calorie" is the first thing on your mind! - It seems unhealthy ...

  • So looking at this picture, what do you think? - It looks tasty.

  • It looks tasty... but seems to have many calories.

  • Oooh that's quite amazing...

  • The day afterwards I wouldn't eat much. - On the next day you eat less?

  • I would eat only healthy things on the next day. - What do you eat on the next day after burgers?

  • Only vegetables to balance out having had this.

  • How often would you eat a burger? - Once every 2-3 months.

  • If I had one per month I would think it's too much so ever 2-3 months

  • would be my thing. - If you got this bang on your plat e what do you do? - Well

  • I could eat it up but I would have to balance it out the days before and after

  • in order to deserve this. - To deserve the burger?

  • In order to eat this without guilt, I would balance it with light foods before and after

  • I can't eat this every day.

  • This type of food has high calories and we generally don't eat that much

  • so when you sometimes have it, it tastes good. - It's like a treat? - Yeah

  • We won't eat this every day.

  • You won't say every other day "let's have a burger or pizza"

  • No way. - When eating something in Japan, what are you worried about?

  • The high calorie amount. It makes me worried.

  • What's your image of US food?

  • Hamburgers! - Meat! - Cola!

  • And more meat.

  • Aaaah that's what we had in mind. -Seeing this, what do you

  • think at first. - That's it.

  • Comparing US and JP food, what is different?

  • American food is just fatty.

  • Their sweets are too colorful. It makes me worried if they're

  • ok to eat. - What makes you worried?

  • They are too blue!

  • I have seen bright orange. They seem to be so unhealthy.

  • Sorry for being rude on this one.

  • So too much color and fat? - It seems unhealthy.

  • If you eat that one, would you be worried? - Yeah. - About what?

  • It looks to fatty. I would worry about weight gain.

  • If you eat it sometimes it's ok but not regularly.

  • I would gain weight if I did that. - Looking

  • at food. No matter the age men and women in Japan

  • seem to say "I would get fat". You seem to worry a lot more here

  • compared to abroad. Why? - People expect Japanese to be skinny

  • all the time. - Our models and TV personalities are very skinny

  • And we all get told that's what's good looking and we all wanna look good

  • so we think a lot about being skinny. - How often a month

  • would you eat hamburgers? - 4 times. - 3 times.

  • 3 times. - Why? - Whaat? Well

  • if you eat that too regularly, it wouldn't be special anymore

  • I would eat it 4 times a month, once a week should be alright.

  • Do you skip dinner on a day when you had a burger?

  • I am used to Japanese food...

  • so US food is only a "sometimes" kind of food.

  • Ta-da. - Wow. - What? - The size...

  • Big size!!! - And here. - What?

  • It looks so tasty. - Wow.

  • Big! - Ta-da - What is that thing in the middle?

  • Coleslaw. It's cabbage. - Wow the meat

  • very.... like this - thick... and now I spoke Japanese to your English

  • What's the first thing you think of?

  • Having those meat juices spread in my mouth! - Tasty! - Yes!

  • It's so thick! Not sure if I could get that all in one bite

  • We showed the same pictures to girls here,

  • Their reactions was different. What do you think they said?

  • If I ate that... - They would worry about weight gain? - Yeah

  • That was their first reaction. Why?

  • Well, because there is lots of meat and calories

  • seem to be high.

  • But you didn't think first "I will get fat if I eat that" when you saw it? - No

  • You showed me these images and I didn't think of that first

  • Why do girls think first of weight gain when they see this?

  • They always have to be worried about calories.

  • Abroad we do pizza parties. Have you done one?

  • One pizza per person is a no. We all share one pizza in a group

  • Even boys won't eat a whole pizza here?

  • We would share one between two

  • Nobody eats them alone. Only eat half a pizza with a friend.

  • Why so? - You wanna eat other flavors too. And the portion is big

  • a bit too big if you ate one alone.

  • But what about the pizzas that have 4 flavor sections?

  • Could you eat that for the variety of flavors?

  • Not alone. We couldn't - So in your life...

  • have you ever eaten an whole pizza - Ok I have - me too

  • How often in your life? - Twice maybe

  • Same here for me. - When? - The family restaurant pizza

  • Saizeria and such. Just a small medium pizza

  • or so. Not that big. - That size?

  • I think. - That size you can eat alone. - Yeah

  • Rather than saying "it looks tasty it looks colorful"

  • it looks like there is a lot of meat"

  • Generally the girls first reactions were "it looks unhealthy, it looks

  • like you'd gain weight. It looks like it has a lot of calories. So instead

  • of taking the food as something to enjoy the first reactions seem to be of

  • something to worry about if you eat too much of it or the wrong type.

  • And what kind of effects it will have on your body. I found a lot that, especially girls

  • don't seem to be able to let their guard down when it is around food. Here

  • in Japan many people are skinny, and many seem to think they are skinny cause they

  • are asian. And it's generally not like that. There is quite a lot of effort that Japanese girls do

  • to keep skinny and a lot of foods that they don't allow themselves to have because they might

  • gain weight. You could hear it from the girls. They thought totally that

  • you have something with high calories, the next day you don't have that or try to eat it with something

  • heathy to balance it out. This might be a healthier lifestyle of approaching it but

  • at the same time... sometimes you need to just enjoy food. You could see it from the boys. The boys said

  • "this looks like a lot of meat and the tasty flavor of the meat would come out" and that

  • reaction we didn't get from a single girl unfortunately. You could see that it says

  • a lot about what kind of relationship we have to food when we look at it and it seems like there's a negative

  • image towards foods that are high in calories, especially foods for Japanese girls

  • come on, you all have seen those youtube videos that have super high calorie foods that just look so tasty

  • and you just wanna try it right. Hah. I have seen some of those. Anyways.

  • On that note, what kind of other things would you like us to go to the streets of Tokyo and let Japanese

  • people react to. Let us know in the comments down below. And if you haven't

  • already, be sure to subscribe. Also we need that notification bell ticked. We're trying to get out

  • so many videos but they don't all reach you, because that notification bell is not ticked. Please

  • please do that. At least you'll get an email when the video comes out, otherwise you'll miss

  • them. Also give us a like just to let us know you enjoyed this video and you're glad we're bringing you out content.

  • Thank you so much for being on this journey with us and I hope I catch you soon

  • for another video here from Tokyo, coming out to you no matter where in the world you are

  • have a lovely day. See you.

Reduce the things you eat the days before and after so you deserve this food.
