  • ♪ >> STEPHEN: WELCOME BACK.

  • WE'RE HERE WITH NATIONAL TREASURE MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY.

  • NOW, YOU'RE KNOWN FOR YOUR UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SPIRIT, YOU

  • KNOW.

  • YOU RALLY THE CROWDS.

  • >> YEAH.

  • >> Stephen: AT BASKETBALL GAMES.

  • YOU'RE NOW A PROFESSOR OF FILM PRODUCTION THERE.

  • WHEN DID THAT START?

  • >> PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE.

  • >> Stephen: PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE.

  • >> YEAH.

  • BECAUSE ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO, IT HIT ME THAT THE CLASS I WISH I

  • WOULD HAVE BEEN TAUGHT WHEN I WAS IN FILM SCHOOL WAS A CLASS

  • THAT SORT OF GAVE ME THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE MAGIC OF FILM MAKING.

  • SO THE CLASS I CREATED IS CALLED FROM SCRIPT TO SCREEN.

  • I REMEMBER AFTER BEING AN ACTOR IN THE INDUSTRY FOR 15 YEARS, I

  • SAID, WOW, THE FINAL PICTURE YOU SEE IS SO DIFFERENT THAN THE

  • ORIGINAL SCRIPT YOU READ NINE, TEN MONTHS AGO.

  • IT GOES THROUGH SO MANY CHANGES ALONG THE WAY, SO I WANTED TO

  • CREATE A CLASS THAT TOOK STUDENTS THROUGH THE BEGINNING,

  • THE FIRST SCRIPT, THE INITIAL SCRIPT THROUGH THE FINAL PRODUCT

  • THAT YOU SEE ON SCREEN, AND THE CLASS IS ABOUT THE CHANGES

  • CHRONOLOGICALLY THAT THAT SCRIPT GOES THROUGH BEFORE IT GETS TO

  • SCREEN AND HOW DIFFERENT IT IS FROM THE ORIGINAL SCRIPT.

  • SO, AGAIN, YOU PUT THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE MAGIC OF MOVIEMAKING,

  • YOU LET STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THAT, HEY, THERE'S MANY WAYS TO

  • SKIN A CAT.

  • YOU LET STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THAT, ETCH THOUGH THIS INITIAL

  • SCRIPT IS EXACTLY WHAT I MAY THINK I WANT, YOU HAVE TO BE

  • OPEN TO INSPIRATION ALONG THE WAY, OPEN TO CREATING ALONG THE

  • WAY, OPEN TO HEARING GREAT IDEAS FROM OTHERS OTHER THAN YOURSELF

  • ALONG THE WAY AND LET THE CREATIVE PROCESS HAPPEN WHILE

  • KEEPING YOUR EYE ON THE ORIGINAL SCRIPT.

  • SO THE CLASS IS ABOUT FILM PRODUCTION AND TELEVISION

  • PRODUCTION BUT CALLED SCRIPT TO SCREEN AND THEY ENTITLED ME

  • PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE BECAUSE I'M TEACHING THE PRACTICAL SIDE

  • OF STOUFFER TELLING.

  • >> Stephen: ARE YOU TEACHING CLASSES OVER ZOOM RIGHT NOW?

  • >> YEAH, WE'RE DOING IT OVER ZOOM.

  • >> Stephen: HOW'S IT WORKING OUT?

  • >> AGAIN, LIKE WE STARTED OFF, NOT AS AWKWARD AS I THOUGHT.

  • WE HAD 35 STUDENTS ON THE SCREEN.

  • WE HAD QUESTIONS, WE HAD A TWO-HOUR CLASS.

  • THE CLASS WENT LONGER THAN IT DID IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE.

  • >> Stephen: IS THAT TOO I EARLY TO HAVE A COCKTAIL OR DO YOU

  • WAIT FOR CLASS TO BE OVER?

  • >> AS LONG AS IT'S NOT TOO LATE.

  • >> Stephen: WHAT'S YOUR ZOOM ETIQUETTE?

  • ANY DOS OR DON'TS?

  • >> ZOOM ETIQUETTE.

  • I'M LEARNING ABOUT THIS A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE I WAS ON A ZOOM

  • CONFERENCE CALL THE OTHER DAY, AND ONE OF MY FRIENDS IN

  • PARTICULAR LOOKED JUST SENSATIONAL, WAS UPLIT, HE

  • LOOKED LIKE A CZAR.

  • I WAS, LIKE, AND I TEXTED HIM I WAS, LIKE, WHAT'S YOUR ZOOM GAME

  • OVER THERE, BUD?

  • AND HE WAS ACTING LIKE, OH, IT'S NOTHING.

  • I FINALLY GOT HIM TO SAY, OH, HE'S GOT A HIGH DEAF THING, HE'S

  • UPLIT FROM THE BOTTOM, HE'S GOT A BACKDROP.

  • I WAS, LIKE, OKAY, YOU WERE VERY CONSIDERATE ABOUT HOW YOU LOOK.

  • SO I'VE LEARNED A FEW THINGS.

  • FACE A WINDOW INSKID OF HAVING IT BEHIND YOU.

  • BUT YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH A LOT OF THINGS, LIKE ARE YOU WEARING

  • PANTS, AM I WEARING PANTS?

  • >> Stephen: LEGALLY, Y I DON'T HAVE TO TELL YOU.

  • >> YOU DON'T HAVE TO TELL ME NOTHING.

  • ( LAUGHTER ) HERE'S A TIP, REMEMBER THE

  • AUDIO.

  • REMEMBER WHAT THE AUDIO IN THE ROOMS AROUND YOU.

  • NOT JUST VIDEO BECAUSE THERE CAN BE FUNNY THINGS THAT INTRUDE

  • AUDIO-WISE FROM THE NEXT ROOM AS WELL.

  • >> Stephen: I HAVE A DOG THAT COMES INTO THE SHOW WITHOUT ANY

  • WARNING.

  • >> WITHOUT ANY PANTS.

  • >> Stephen: IT'S JUST SHOCKING, SOMETIMES HE LAYS

  • DOWN, SPREADS HIS LEGS AND AIRS THEM OUT.

  • >> COME ON, DADDY, REACH OVER AND GIVE ME A TICKLE, COME ON.

  • ( LAUGHTER ) >> Stephen: LAST WEEK YOU

  • CALLED OUT THE NUMBERS FOR A BINGO GAME AT A SENIOR CENTER

  • AND THAT MADE A BIG SPLASH.

  • HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT?

  • WHY DID YOU END UP BEING THE GUY CALLING OUT THE BINGO NUMBERS AT

  • A SENIOR CENTER, MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY?

  • >> ANOTHER THING ON MY RESUME.

  • WELL, THIS SENIOR CENTER WERE FANS OF MINE AND THEY HAD

  • REACHED OUT, I DON'T KNOW, A MONTH AND A HALF AGO FOR ME TO

  • COME IN LIVE AND DO BINGO.

  • I WAS BUSY AND WASN'T ABLE TO DO IT AT THE TIME BUT HAD IT ON MY

  • CALENDAR AND TRIED TO PULL IT OFF.

  • ALL OF A SUDDEN, THIS HAPPENED.

  • I SAID LET'S SEE IF THEY STILL PLAY BINGO.

  • I SAID WE'LL ZOOM IN AND BE THE BINGO CALLERS.

  • IT WAS A HOOT OF A DIME.

  • WE HAD SUCH A GOOD TIME AND THEY ARE SO DOGGONE HAPPY.

  • WE'LL PROBABLY BE DOING IT AGAIN.

  • >> Stephen: MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY, THANK YOU SO MUCH

  • FOR BEING HERE.

  • YOU'RE A GOOD MAN AND THANK YOU FOR HELPING HOMEPEOPLE AND

  • STOPPING BY TO KEEP US COMPANY TONIGHT.

  • CHEERS.

  • >> KEEP ROCKING, ALWAYS APPRECIATE IT, STEPHEN, AND HEY,

  • AMERICA, LET'S DO THIS, MAN.

  • WE GOT THIS.

  • >> Stephen: JUST KEEP LIVIN'.

  • MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY, EVERYBODY.

  • WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.
