  • This is the lock picking lawyer, and what I have for you today is one of the better trailer coupler locks currently in production, though I do have some reservations, which I will discuss later.

  • It's the proven Industries model 2178 viewer.

  • Jesse generously bought it and had it shipped directly to me.

  • I'll emphasize the word generous because this is not a cheap lock.

  • If you buy it with the aluminum body puck lock, it costs $215.

  • However, if you upgrade to the stainless steel puck lock as Jesse did, it costs $315.

  • We'll revisit that price in just a moment.

  • But first, let's take a look at what you get for the money.

  • This has a two piece deal.

  • Construction with most of the outer portion, comprised of quarter inch thick steel plate and most of the inner parts made of 3/16 inch thick steel plate.

  • All told, about £6.3 of steel surrounding your coupler that doesn't include the puck lock.

  • If you do include it, it's £8.7 so let me show you how this works.

  • You take this inner part and place this portion into the end of the coupler that normally accepts the ball hedge.

  • Once that's in position, we can take this thick steel pipe inserted there and lock everything into position with the puck law.

  • Now, seeing this all locked up reminds me of something very important.

  • Traveler Couplers are easily damaged, and because of that they're usually easily replaceable.

  • As such, oftentimes a locked coupler can simply be unbolted and replaced quickly with a $20 part.

  • So you need to consider countermeasures like spot welding your bolts because a coupler lock does no good if you can simply replace the coupler.

  • Now let's take a look at this pub lock.

  • This is a beautifully machined 303 stainless steel lock body with a core that I believe is sourced from Pak Lock.

  • As I've noted in past videos, pack lock tends to be ahead of the curve when it comes to pick resistance, and that's before you factor in that you would have to pick this while on the ground under a trailer.

  • But as nice as this is, the price is way above market.

  • This is a $100 upgrade implying a value that's even higher for reference.

  • I just went on eBay and found half a dozen sellers were this multi lock TR 100 a true high security puck lock for the same price.

  • Bottom line.

  • The upgraded lock is a poor security value, and if I felt the need to upgrade over the included aluminum puck lock, I'd be buying it elsewhere.

  • So all that said, let's see what it takes to pick this open on when I'm doing that.

  • Remember that it would be harder to pick while I'm on the ground under a trailer.

  • So let's get some tension in there.

  • And I'm using a 40 thousands thick pry bar in a standard hook in 18 thousands.

  • Nothing on one, too.

  • Nice click out of three.

  • Another click three fields set.

  • Four.

  • Click there still binding Harry.

  • Go for Feel set five.

  • Definitely binding, but it doesn't seem to want to move.

  • There we go.

  • Little click out of five.

  • Click at a six back to the beginning.

  • Nothing on one click out of two.

  • Number three.

  • Click there we got a 44 still binding.

  • Another click.

  • Nothing on five.

  • Quick out of six back to the beginning.

  • Nothing on one click out of to another click Nothing on 34 five or six.

  • I think we're probably close.

  • Number one is binding now.

  • Click there to his binding quick at it to to feel set nothing on three.

  • Click out of four, and we open that up.

  • So let's take this apart and see what's inside.

  • To remove this core, we have a small set screw that will have to remove.

  • And to remove the shackle from the core, it looks like we will need to remove a small role pen.

  • I have a punch handy and a small mallet on.

  • Let me get a pinning tray.

  • Next thing we need to do is remove another set.

  • Screw.

  • That's what limits the rotation of the corps.

  • And now we should just need the key and a follower, and this will come apart.

  • Okay, it looks like we have six pins.

  • They are all silver and color.

  • Probably steal for drill end corrosion resistance Standard in one.

  • Same in 23 45 and six.

  • Let's check to see if their magnetic very lightly Magnetics.

  • Almost certainly a hard stainless steel.

  • Let me arrange all these, Then we'll get the driver pins out.

  • Okay, if this follows form with most Pak lah cores, we should have a lot of security pins.

  • A spool in slot one made of stainless steel, a stainless steel serrated pen and slot, too spool and three serrated and four spool.

  • And five and serrated in six.

  • And let's dump thes springs out.

  • Ah, looks like we have a couple different power springs.

  • I wish I knew which slots they were in, but too late Now, two of the springs appear to be a little bit stronger.

  • Intention than the rest.

  • That's probably four bump resistance and very nice to see.

  • Okay, let me get a little closer for you here.

  • Okay?

  • You can see for keep ins.

  • They are all stainless steel.

  • Keep in standard than for our driver pins.

  • We have spools and slots.

  • 13 and five again.

  • All stainless steel and serrated pins in 24 and six.

  • Been looking at these springs.

  • You can see we have for lighter springs and to heavier springs again.

  • That is probably four bump resistance.

  • So I think this is a really nice score.

  • Hopefully proven industries will stick with them because it was hard to be hard to do much better than that without going to a different format lock.

  • In any case, that's all I have for you today.

  • If you do have any questions or comments about this, please put them below.
