Now, if you were to ask a handful of PC gamers which titles are worthy of making into their top 10 lists, then I'm pretty certain that the original half life would be mentioned a few times.

Originally released in 1998 on PC, this classic was re released US Half Life source in 2004.

This digitally remastered edition features updated visuals, physics simulation and enhanced effects.

Still, there's nothing quite like experiencing the original, and that's the version I'm playing here.

As far a system requirements go, it should run on any PC built or manufactured within the last 15 years, so I wouldn't worry about any performance issues.

But what if you've started playing this or you've tried to play and found that there are compatibility issues with your modern hardware or you just can't get past the way it looks well for that there is always the aforementioned source version, which, while impressive for me 2000 standards, also shows its age nowadays.

Personally, it's all about the game play for me and the visuals, a part of what makes this game feel special.

However, this is after all.

Dot dot insert game title here the miniseries where we take older games and give them a visual overhaul using mods just to see how well they run on the hardware that would otherwise make light work of the original or vanilla game.

Why do we do this?

Well, as always, because it's fun.

Usually this is the part where I tell you about the mod I'm using and maybe discuss some other tweaks that improve the graphics this time around, though well, it seems all of that has already been taken.

This is Black Mesa, a fan made reimagining of the original Half Life Game.

It looks fantastic on dhe.

As expected, the minimum requirements are more demanding, but even so, you shouldn't need a modern machine by any means.

A jewel core CPU.

And to get video card should do the trick as well.

A six gigabytes of ram.

But what performance difference can you expect between the original half life on crowbar collectives?

Incredible reimagining.

Well, that's where this machine comes in.

This old rig features a Z on East 56 45 with all but two of six cause disabled, six gigabytes of memory and for the purpose of this video, both agree forced to 10 from NVIDIA, commonly referred to as the worst graphics card ever to exist, even though it's probably not the worst and the a M.

T, the Rx 5 50 is a few years old and retailed for $79 new targeting those on a very tight budget.

So apologies for the recording method to start with I will switch to screen capture momentarily.

But for the G force to 10 which finds my capture cars software a little too much to handle, I've had to make do with a 2000 and seven style recording set up as far as the original half life is concerned.

A few drops will occur on 10 80 p is best avoided.

But all in all, it's not a bad experience.

What about Black Mesa, then?

Will it run on this hardware hardware that makes relatively light work of the original.

Well, surprisingly, we were able to run the game orbit at 800 by 600 resolution and all of the graphical options turned way down, although you will have to make do with 20 or so F.

Most of the time, I did see it least 30 frames per second.

Inquire toa areas.

Is it playable?

Probably no, at least not 100% of the time.

But I think to some extent we were all expecting this.

We know that the 2 10 is a pretty bad card, one that's intended for user's who require a display adapter as opposed to a gaming GPU.

When we move on to the AMG Rx 5 50 another weaker option, but one that offers a significant performance increase over the 2 10 We find that the original half life is playable at 60 F.

Ps with 10 80 p resolution.

This seems to be the cap unless we were to unlock it manually.

But for me, 100 frames per second is more than fine.

The game won't often drop below 90.

A lot of the time, either.

The different levels may vary.

Black Mesa will also run very well on this set up again with the two cause off, easy on enabled and six gigs off memory.

In fact, the medium preset was enough to experience smooth gameplay most of the time on 60 f.

S should be doable if you want to turn things down a little more.

I don't think we need to spend too much time on this because it seems as though even older hardware should still be able to run this reimagined version off half life with relative ease.

And I'm so glad that this is the case.

Crowbar Collective have helped me relive my teenage years.

Thanks to this wonderful reimagining off half life.

The new voice, acting dialogue and, of course, visual overhaul have really helped breathe new life into this world without taking the original feel of the nineties classic away.

And that is hard to do.

I'm going to stop now before it starts to sound like I'm getting paid to say he this seriously, though, if you want to experience half life again or for the first time that are put off by the look of the original, then Black Mesa is the way to go.

Personally, I'd recommend playing the original first just because its half life and it's always worthy of multiple play throughs.

But there we go.
