  • I'm the last to talk about this, but I'm probably also the last to experience it, So I finally was like, Oh yeah, there's a topic about this I should probably share with my audience And that being what happens when you change the thermal pad on a 57 160 to thermal paste?

  • So this is the graphite thermal pad that it comes on the cooler on this now Steven Gamers Nexus has covered this already, and it's actually his video or I shouldn't watch the video.

  • I just remembered that there's Ah, thing to do.

  • If you're going to switch it to thermal pace, we're gonna kind of demonstrate.

  • The difference is right now, because there are improvements to be had if you're running this cooler.

  • If you were an early adopter to the new Navy stuff, this is the cooler that you got, which was just a blower cooler, which sucks.

  • And then they went with the extra thermal pads because I think that a lot of these left over from, like, the radio on seven era.

  • So they went with that on here, which is really odd, because this is not three d memory or stacked ram or anything that to deal with on the sides.

  • See conventional memory.

  • There are the pads right there.

  • So what I've done is this is one of the coolers I had on a water block, and so I took the water block off, and I put it back when we were doing the video about doing the bios flash on this and then I noticed, like, Holy crap, it is running really, really hot.

  • So I'm gonna demonstrate that right now here's the placebo fan curve.

  • We call it that because remember it's not smooth like that.

  • It's a stupid step system, because am these driver team got their degrees of writing drivers out of a box of Cracker Jack, So make sure he was gonna happen with the temperature here.

  • Quick current temperature injunction temperature, Which is funny, like our current and saying edge just as current.

  • Now, watch how fast this is going to increase because what we have going on right now is by simply switching it to a thermal paste.

  • It's now, um, not making a very good contact.

  • So this is just gonna continue to get hotter and hotter and hotter.

  • And usually that junction temperatures more like 10 to 2010 to 15 degrees or so What?

  • We're exceeding 20 degrees delta now between the edge temp in the junction temp.

  • I have the fan club, as you can see, much more aggressive than it normally is, and we're still seeing these temperatures.

  • But as you can see as a fan of slowing down now because we took away my custom fan curve, you can see that it's starting to get hotter.

  • So this is basically right now the scenario we kind of created is hey, I wanna I wanna play with my stuff and make it better.

  • I'm gonna replace this thermal pad with thermal pace because thermal paste is good, you can get things like crime not and all that sort of stuff and get really good thermal pace.

  • And then you put it back on and you go, What the heck?

  • It's running hotter.

  • So we're gonna kind of show you right now, what with the stock fan curve, too, by the way, because I still think Amy's fan curve is not nearly aggressive enough.

  • I think it maxes out at, like, 40% or something.

  • And you saw a minute?

  • Was that 85%?

  • And yes, although it was keeping the temperatures well within check down into the eighties with Van Kirk Hi, it was also very noisy, which is another problem with this cooler.

  • But we're gonna do right now is we're just gonna let it stop climbing and see how hot it is because we need to compare our before and after numbers and then we'll show you a little trick to make the thermal pace make better contact.

  • So what I've done right now is I've locked the benchmark at a spot that we know is like particularly difficult to render because it's got all this test elation, the rocks, that foliage lighting, ship ropes, all that stuff.

  • And you can see now the temperatures are sitting at about 103 ej temp.

  • Are you a junction, Tim?

  • And US 75 76 on the edge Temp.

  • This is kind of our before or after, and what we want to compare two is our tour clock.

  • So it started around 1950.

  • And as this temp keeps going up, obviously this starts to drop.

  • So it looks like that's kind of where we're just sort of hovering around right now.

  • So I think that's a pretty good spot.

  • Two compared to like, a jumped up to 1913% we're going to do now is gonna let this cool down, and I'm gonna do that by maxing out way.

  • That's Power Limited.

  • Anyway, um, that's what's pulling that copper heat sink down against the corps along with spring loaded back plate so you could see how it's not flat.

  • See what kind of lift up so as you tighten it down these rubber pads right here push against the back plate or like it's our plastic push against this back plate, which then kind of like, squeeze it all together.

  • I've taken these apart before, I swear.

  • There we go.

  • So, yeah, we're gonna do right now is what is gonna clean that we're gonna reapply paste, and then we're gonna add those four washers to make that thing compress more because what's happening is the spring is fully compressing, and it's stopping it from going down, and we're pulling it any tighter.

  • And then I believe the threads of the screws were also bottoming out so that you don't over tighten Well, the problem is, we need to slightly over Titan versus where we were before because we're adding different material there because the thickness of that pad is making up for that void that the liquid or the thermal paste is not ableto like completely compress.

  • So the closer we can get that cooler toe actually touching.

  • Where's my thermal paste?

  • Look, I'm just using an export for this two.

  • Not even the best stuff, but the closer we can get that thermal, um, material and the cooler itself to touching the die, the better it will be in.

  • This is just isopropyl alcohol that I'm using here.

  • The fan curve at 2100 is clearly not enough so I want to go ahead and enable a more aggressive fan curve.

  • I don't know if maybe where we put the washer was wrong, but it makes sense to me because it's between the thing.

  • So it's causing the thread set to pull and farther to bottom out, so I don't see how that wouldn't work.

  • It's between the back plate and the bracket, so that's where the distance would have to be made up for in the other end.

  • Now, the reason why this even became a video today is because I was messing with this card a couple weeks ago.

  • We saw that was hitting like 100 and 10 C on the junction temp.

  • So I mean, I probably would have been fine with a good stock banker before, but what I did was like by increasing the rpm just a little bit like I'm kind of playing around here trying to get around 25 heart 100 rpm.

  • The problem is a M D takes like six minutes for the fans to finally equalized with where you set them, which is stupid.

  • Our course clock speed bounces around a little bit.

  • Still, even though this scene isn't moving it.

  • I think this is a just A and e's logic at this point, but I'm gonna go ahead and give it a little bit more power limit to come.

  • Just kind of curious.

  • Now at this point, look at the clock speed that came up almost 25 2050 so nearly 100 megahertz jump just by moving the power limit.

  • So even after playing around some of the over clocks and the undervolt like we just kind of showed you, we noticed it's not fluctuating or bouncing around nearly as much as I showed.

  • You hear how the power consumption was like swing and way high was, like 200 and then 1 44 and, like 200 what we think is potentially happening here with the power consumption and the reason why I see there's 200 now watch.

  • It'll drop C 1 88 and Michael had done like 1 50 No.

  • Two of six.

  • We added more power limits.

  • Obviously, it's drawing more power, but we think what's happening with stock, with the better temperatures and a little bit higher fan curve and the core clocks be we being way more stable now is we think that before, with the better thermal paste, it was allowing it.

  • Thio try and clock up a little bit higher and as a clock up a little bit higher than we'll start bumping against things like temperature limited power limit and being fan limited at that point at 2100 rpm, raising it toe 29 to 3000.

  • We're seeing some of the same behavior, but it's much more stable because now we're starting to hit more of an equilibrium before we hit a hard limit, like the temperature or the power limit.

  • So if I was to take this and put it back down to it's got, like, 10 now, we're definitely doing.

  • If you look right here is, we're definitely hitting that power consumption limit ways sooner, and now it's swinging like 40 50 watts each direction.

  • So was this video pointless?

  • Maybe a little bit, but we saw the temps were climbing.

  • We had to do this anyway, and we like to make videos about this stuff.

  • As it happens, some of you might be experiencing overheating problems.

  • Some of you might have changed thermal pace have been like What the heck?

  • Why am I suddenly running harder?

  • It could be that it could be the gap.

  • And with that thermal pad being removed, it's thicker than thermal paste would be.

  • So I think the reality is these coolers just run really warm.

  • They're not that big, as you can see right there.

  • All of this is just fan and fake PCB or fake heat sink back here touching this medal that technically isn't really touching anything for way over there.
