  • This is the lock picking lawyer, and what I have for you today is a U Haul branded APIs model 85 50 padlock, and at first examination, this appears to be a fairly competent lock.

  • However, after taking a close look, I found a design flaw that allows it to be opened in moments with a very low skill attack.

  • So what we have here is a pretty normal looking, 50 millimeter, brass bodied padlock.

  • It has an eight millimeter hardened steel shackle, and it does have spring loaded locking lugs inside, so this theoretically could be shamed open.

  • However, the tolerances around the shackle are so tight that I was unable to get shims in both sides.

  • They did a fairly good job with pick resistance as well.

  • In fact, let's look at that.

  • First, let's see what it takes to pick this open, going to put some bottom of the key way tension in here with a fairly narrow wiper insert to give me lots of room for my pick.

  • And I'm going to be using a standard hook in 25 thousands.

  • Okay, Number one is binding.

  • Click out of that and a little bit of a false set.

  • Little counter rotation on two counter rotation on three.

  • Got him set.

  • But we lost our false set, Looking at one and two and looks like we dropped one.

  • So 12 three are all set.

  • Let's go back to four little counter rotation there.

  • I got four set, but once again, we lost our false set.

  • C one, too.

  • A number of three.

  • Looks like we dropped him.

  • And number one, we dropped one as well.

  • Okay, let's see.

  • 12 34 Okay, five is our last pin.

  • Little counter rotation there.

  • Okay, Number five.

  • I feel like I might have pushed him a little too far.

  • Maybe over.

  • Set him.

  • Okay?

  • We dropped our I think pin number one, we lost our false set.

  • No pin number two.

  • There we go.

  • Let's see.

  • 34 five.

  • There we go.

  • One is binding again.

  • And we got this open, so it may not have looked like it, but the combination of spools and very tight tolerances makes this a pretty tricky locked open.

  • It does require some skill.

  • However, as I said before, there's a flaw that we can exploit to open this much, much faster.

  • I'll show you the problem on this model first.

  • Usually, when a lock is opened, the key and driver pin stack is raised to the point where the plug can turn due to the gap between the key and driver pen.

  • But imagine if you could lift both the key and the driver pin above that sheer line.

  • Now it's not possible on this model, and that's the case for most locks as well.

  • But sometimes a lock maker overlooks this and leaves enough room for that toe happen.

  • And that's the problem with this lock.

  • And there are tools specifically made to exploit this flaw.

  • They're called comb picks, and they push up on each of the pin stacks and lift them all the way above the sheer line.

  • Just that fast, we got it open, and I have one more of these locks here once again opened it very, very quickly.

  • So as you saw, this exploit is very fast, and it is a great example of how a small oversight and either design or manufacturing can translate into a major security flaw.

  • In any case, that's all I have for you today.

  • If you do have any questions or comments about this, please put them below.

  • And, as always, have a nice day.

  • Thank you.
