Aboutfourmonthsago, I wasfiredfromFacebookand I wantedtocheckintodayandkindofgiveyouanupdateonwhatlifehasbeenlikeeversincehavingbeenfired, where I'm at, what I'm goingtodoaboutmycareerandmygoingbacktowork.
I havebeenworkingoutofHawaii, NewYork, LasVegas, SiliconValley, ofcourse, whichiswhereonbase.
Andthenrecently I'vebeeninPoland, andnow I'm inHelsinki, Finland, and I couldcontinuethislifestyleindefinitely.
I couldbein a newcityeverysinglemonth.
If I don't likecode, whether I couldbechasingthesummer's acrosstheworld, I couldgotocitieswithbetterexchangerates.
Soit's justthatmymoneygoesevenfurther.
Butthemoneyisn't reallytheissuehere.
I wouldsay, actually, what's limitingmeinmyabilitytojusttravelanywhere I wantisthetimethat I have.
Forexample, I wouldlovetogotoMountEverestonthetwoweekhikingexpedition.
But I justdon't wanttogiveupthatamountoftimejustyet.
It's notwhat I'm lookingforbecausewhat I'm lookingforisnotlike a standardvacation.
I'm nothereonvacation.
I'm notheretosightsee.
I'm kindoflookingforthisdelicatebalancebetweenbothbeingabletobeproductiveandgetmydailyworkdoneandjustlive a normallifewhilehaving a littlebitofadditionalsightseeinginplace.
I'm limitingmyselftothesebig, safecitieswhere I canbefairlyproductive, easilyandquickly.
I don't wanttohavetoberunningaroundtown.
I'm notlookingfor a oncein a lifetimecrazyadventure.
Therewillbe a timeforthat.
Butit's notwhat I'm lookingforrightnow.
Sobeingwiththetravel, whileit's greatandtheopensup a lotofopportunitiesandyoucangothroughmanydifferentcitiesaroundtheworld, itmaynotbewhatyou'reimaginingwhereyou'reworkingonthebeachorworkingoutoftherainforestsoftheAmazon, becausechancesare I knowif I weretogototheselocations, I probablywouldn't getthatmuchworkdone.
I wouldjustbesobusyexploringandsitescene, andforme, I personallystillenjoyCaliforniaiswheremydogis.
I liketheweather.
I havemyfamilythere, have a greatcomputerdesksetuptheremybigmonitor, fastInternet.
Butforme, thebarisincrediblyhighforwhattypeofsuccess I needonthisYouTubechannelfortobeconsideredworthmytime.
Because I knowif I weretogopickup a jobinSiliconValleyas a seniorsoftwareengineer, I couldprobablybedoingatleast 405 100 K andsalarylike I wasdoing 500 k overatFacebook.
It's kindoflikehalf a vacationhalfbusiness, while I'm stilldoing a bitofworkwhile I'm outhere.
So I thinkthistypeoflifestyleandtimemanagement, whereyou'rereallyfocusedonmakingthingsworkandyou're 100% accountableforalloftheresultsandimpactthatyou'repushingorifyou'rewastingtime, thinkyou'reaccountableforthataswell.
I thinkittakes a bitoftrainingtoreallygetusedtothisbecauselet's faceit, mostpeopleincosthey'rewastingsomuchtime, theymaybeoverengineeringsomething, spendinghours, craftingthisbeautiful, wellcraftedemailthere, playingthepoliticsgames.
Youdon't havealloftheresourceisandfastInternetandequipmentandcoworkersandprofessionalnetworkthatcomeswith a largercompany.
You'reprettymuchjustonyourown, andwhathappenswiththatisalso a lossofsocialstatus.
Because, let's faceit, there's only a thinlinedividingmeandthehomelessbum, andthatissimplysomeincomeflowingit.
Butotherthanthat, youknow, I couldbehomeless.
Andifmybusinesswerenottomakemuchincome, then I'm prettymuch a homelessbumwho's callinghimselfentrepreneurorfounder, whichthousandsormillionsofpeopleouttherearedoing.
Anyways.
There's justnotmuchsocialstatusandtheamountofrespect I get.
Andmanypeopletheylookatmeassomerandomyoutubercomparedto, say, being a staffsoftwareengineeratFacebookorattackleadoveratGoogleandthesenamescarryfarmoreweight.
Butofcoursethosearenamesthat I wouldbeborrowingfrom.
Anothercompanyisnot a namethat I wouldcreateonmyown, whichissomething I think, thatit's farmoredifficulttodo, butatthesametimegetsfarlessrespect.
I havenotitle, nocoworkerstovouchforme.
Theprojects I'm workingon, veryfewpeoplewouldknowabout, comparedtoif I wereworkingonsomewellknownproductoverGoogleorFacebook.
Andsohalfthetime I'm justthinkingmaybe I shouldjustgobacktoworkinTechandwouldn't thatbecomfortableandsecureandstable?
Andsothat's somethingthat's alwayskindofinmymind, Anditmaybe a sortofthiswavewheresometimes I workon, like a lifestyletypeofbusinesslikethis, where I'm runningmyownthing.
I'm givingmyselfprobably a yearofburntimeorsobefore I thinkaboutseriouslygoingbackto a 9 to 5 jobcareerwhere I haveallofthatstability, becausethat's important, too, andover.
I thinkthat's not a badwaytogoaboutthat, whereyouralternatingbetweenworkingforyourself, sometimespursuingsomeopportunitywhereyouhave a lotoffreedomtotravelandbeyourownboss.
Andthenothertimesyoumaybeworkingaspartof a largercompanyworkingforsomebodydoingthe 95 grand.
