  • we're now ready to explore social media

  • and there's two sides to social media that i want to discuss before we get really

  • into the detail of what you can do to promote your business on probably the

  • fastest growing

  • marketing platform out there, so

  • first of all there's social bookmarking

  • and there's social media

  • social bookmarking is about having the icons that you have seen on your site or

  • on other sites that say share this

  • so they might say like or they might say tweet

  • or it might just be a google plus one button or a pinterest button uh... but its a

  • way a device for others

  • on their own own social media activity

  • to promote your pages

  • and it really ties back into

  • the link strategy

  • that we spoke about in a previous module

  • so thats social bookmarking but its not to be mistaken which social media

  • marketing

  • and social media marketing is

  • all about

  • you being on the social networks and promoting

  • yourself and your business

  • your activity on social media will fall into two distinct areas

  • first of all broadcast so this is where you create highly valuable content and

  • you find the mechanism to share that content on we're going to go through a

  • lot of that uh... in detail throughout this module

  • and then secondly engagement

  • now we're going to be some tips on how to engage with others but engagement is

  • absolutely critical

  • if you try and just set up

  • uh... campaign on autopilot where you just broadcast out to the masses it will

  • not work

  • social media is not about that

  • social media is all about engagement and the broadcast element is about you

  • sharing

  • valuable content so that others

  • can engage with you just like we're going to show you

  • how you can engage with others

  • so whatever you do

  • don't put your social media on autopilot

  • now it is true that theres tools that can help you become more efficient and i

  • want to speak about of those later in this section

  • but don't put it on autopilot whereby you automatically re-tweet

  • people and you you just subscribe to our ss feeds uh... and you've re-post out

  • other people's content with out actually seeing it yourself

  • so using tools that make you more efficient or help you to cut down the

  • amount of time you need on social media

  • that's a great thing but make sure it is just you manually doing something that

  • would otherwise take you

  • longer to do

  • so let me talk about hootsuite as an example is not the only package but it's

  • the one that i use uh... i'll use it as an example of the social media

  • management platform

  • now what i can do within hootsuite and i have left

  • links in the resources to hootsuite

  • is i can manage

  • my twitter my facebook my google plus my youtube you know all in

  • the same uh... platform all on the same website all of the same mobile app

  • uh...

  • and that saves me a lot of time

  • now what i've don't do is post the same message out to all of those

  • platforms just because i can

  • so you've got to use the tools cleverly

  • you've got to apply your own common sense and build your own strategy

  • in but the tools will help you to be more efficient

  • so don't just put it on autopilot use the tools just to help you become

  • more efficient

  • so what i really advise is setting up a content plan

  • but content plan is all about

  • building up

  • what useful and valuable content you could share with others and deciding how

  • you're going to do that

  • and when we go into the individual social media sites in a minute

  • what you'll see is that we've got let's say youtube for video slideshare is

  • good for power point presentations or flickr and pinterest are great for pictures

  • um... blogging is great for text so we've got various different mechanisms

  • that we can use

  • to post valuable content

  • and then there's other sites

  • and in fact those sites as well where we can then share that valuable content

  • so whatever you do build a content plan

  • and in fact the worksheet now for

  • this particular section

  • is all about your content plan

  • so you've got a lot of resources

  • uh... on this section to have a look at especially on the hootsuite and how

  • you could set up a hootsuite account to make

  • what we're going to show you more efficient

  • but definitely build yourself a content plan

  • you shouldn't start social media

  • without anything

  • to say
