INTERVIEWER: Jaap van Zweden and the New York Philharmonic
will conclude the 2021 season.
With the US premiere of Gyorgy Kurtag's opera
Fin De Partie based on Samuel Beckett's Dystopian tragicomedy
in a fully staged production.
DEBORAH BORDA: Alex Ross called this piece
the great final monument of the 20th century.
Of course the Philharmonic now has
a tradition of presenting fully staged operas.
JAAP VAN ZWEDEN: We really laugh.
Pieces where all the art comes together.
Acting, of course the singing, staging,
and we work with phenomenal people
and very inspiring people.
INTERVIEWER: The production will be
directed by Claire van Kampen, who is also
a pianist, composer, early music specialist, and playwright
of the Tony nominated Farinelli and The King.
CLAIRE VAN KAMPEN: I'm looking at chess
as a kind of overall metaphor for where we are.
The New York Philharmonic will be onstage
so therefore the orchestra has a very powerful role to play.
How it will play out in the production,
you'll have to come and see.
INTERVIEWER: The Philharmonic will enrich its exploration
of Kurtag and Beckett through a performance at 92nd Street Y,
and a new music evening as part of The Grow at Annenberg
Sound ON series featuring Philharmonic musicians
performing chamber music by Kurtag and inspired by Beckett.
