Well, here are four easy keys you can apply to look good in Skype interviews.

では、これから4つの簡単なポイントをお教えします。スカイプ面接で好印象を持ってもらうのに活用できますよ。

Key 1: Sound

ポイント１：音

Having good sound is just as important as having good video.

音声状況が良好であることは、映像の状況が良好であることと同じくらい、とにかく重要です。

An empty room like this might sound fine to you in normal conversation, but it creates an annoying echo for anyone listening on video, especially if the floor isn't carpeted.

このような何もない部屋は、通常の会話では問題なく聞こえます。でも、機器を通して聴いている人にとっては邪魔なエコーがかかってしまいます。床がカーペット敷きの場合は特にです。

Basically, the more stuff that's in the room to deflect the sound, the less echo.

基本的には、物が多く置いてある部屋の方が音は屈折するので、エコーが少なくなります。

And make sure there's no loud noises in the background.

それと、後ろの方で大きな雑音がしない場所にしましょう。

Loud office conversations, construction, an air conditioner - these will make your interview painful to listen to.

賑やかなオフィスの話し声や、工事音、エアコンの音などは、面接時の音声を聞き取りにくくしてしまいます。

Key 2: Location

ポイント２：場所

Create a good background.

良い背景を演出しましょう。

This one is not good: It makes me look like a total slob.

これはだめですね。僕が完全にだらしない人間に見えます。

This one is too distracting. What's that guy doing back there?

これは、メチャメチャ気が散ります。あの人は後ろで何してるんだ？って。

And this one... just make sure you don't have anything embarrassing in the background.

この場合は、とにかく背後に恥ずかしいものを一切置かないようにしましょう。

Keep it neat and simple.

整理整頓してシンプルにしておきましょう。

A white wall is usually too plain, so I set up a bookshelf like this.

白い壁だとあまりにも殺風景だと感じる場合も多いので、僕は、こんなふうに本棚を置きました。

You can also use a houseplant, a lampshade, a piece of art, etc.

他にも観葉植物とか、間接照明、美術品なども使えるでしょう。

If you're at the office, you can set up a clean desk with a computer in the background.

オフィスにいる場合は、背後にきれいな机にパソコンを置いた状態を演出すると良いですね。

Now, you're probably using a laptop with a built-in camera or a webcam like this.

さて、たぶん皆さんは、カメラ内蔵のノートパソコンか、このようなウェブカメラを使っていると思います。

Notice how the camera is actually several inches below my eyes.

カメラが目の高さよりも低い位置にあるのが見えますね。

So, when you're looking through the camera, if you angle it at your face, it shows the ceiling.

つまり、カメラに向かっている時に、自分の顔に角度を合わせると、天井まで映り込んでしまいます。

So, you want to stack it up on a box like this.

ですから、パソコンを箱などの上に置くと良いでしょう。こんなふうに。

Basically, you want the camera at eye-level, because this is the way people are used to seeing you.

基本的に、カメラの位置は目の高さに合わせます。なぜなら、人はこの高さでの会話に慣れているからです。

And you want to be a little more than arm's length from the camera, so you're about this size in the frame.

そして、カメラからの距離は、腕の長さよりも少し遠くに離れているくらいにします。そうすると、これくらいの大きさで映ります。

And you want your eyes to be about two-thirds of the way to the top.

その際、目の位置は映像フレームの高さの3分の2あたりにしましょう。

Key 3: Lighting

ポイント3：光

Good lighting makes a huge difference.

上手に光を当てることで、ずいぶん違いが出ます。

Professional lighting uses four light sources, but you really only need one.

プロの照明技術では4つの光源が使われますが、本当に必要なのは１つだけ。

If it's daytime, you can just use a window.

日中なら、窓を利用すればいいんです。

If it's too bright, pull the shades.

明るすぎる場合は、カーテンやブラインドなどを使いましょう。

You need the window to be pretty much in front of you, not to the side or behind.

位置的には窓の真正面でなければなりません。窓を横にした位置でも、窓が後ろでもだめです。

Wow, I think I've found the worst interview setup ever.

おぉ、これまでで一番ダメな面接場所を見つけたみたいです。

If it's nighttime or there's no window nearby, grab a lamp.

面接が夜間だったり、そばに窓がない場合は、照明を使いましょう。

Don't use overhead lighting like this: It makes you look terrible.

こんなふうに頭上から光を当ててはいけません。映りが悪くなります。

And definitely don't light yourself from below, unless you're telling scary campfire stories.

また、絶対に下から顔を照らしてはいけません。キャンプファイアーを囲んで怪談話をするわけではないですからね。

What you want is a lamp in front of you, like this one, with the light slightly above the height of your eyes while you're sitting down.

やってほしいことは、照明を自分の正面に置くことです。こういった照明です。ライトの位置がほんの少し、座っている自分の目の高さの上にくるくらいのね。。

Of course, this one is great because I can adjust the levels, but pretty much any lamp will do.

間違いなく、これはいいですね。高さの調節もできるし。でも、だいたいどんな照明器具でも大丈夫ですよ。

If it's too bright, try moving it back. If it's too dim, just move it a little closer.

明るすぎる場合は、後ろの方に移動させてみましょう。暗すぎる場合は、少しだけ近くに寄せます。

Key 4: You

ポイント4：自分

Now that everything else is set up, make sure you look good.

これで自分以外の全部の準備が整いました。自分自身もきちんと見えるようにしましょう。

Dress appropriately, at least on top.

面接に適した服装をしましょう。少なくとも上半身は。

You might want to wear makeup - yeah, even some men do it.

メイクをするのも良いかもしれません。確かに、男でもメイクをする人はいますから。

And don't look down at the computer screen while being interviewed - look directly at the camera.

それから、面接の間はパソコンの画面の方に目線を下げないでください。まっすぐカメラを見るんです。

Now, this might feel a little weird to you at first, but to the people watching, it looks like you're looking directly at them, which is good.

これに関しては、最初は変な感じが少しするかもしれませんが、相手の方からは、まっすぐ相手を見ているように見えるので、大丈夫ですよ。

And try not to move too much.

あとは、あまり動き過ぎないようにしましょう。

Even just a few inches back and forth can be really distracting.

ほんの数センチ前後に動くだけでも、けっこう気が散るものです。

So, to recap: Find a quiet place without distracting sounds.

では、まとめです。— 静かな場所を見つけましょう。邪魔になるような音がしないところです。

Set up a good background.

背後をきちんとセッティングして。

Set your camera at eye level arm's length away.

カメラを目の高さに設置し、腕の長さ分くらい離れましょう。

Make sure you have good lighting.

上手に光を使いましょう。

And make sure you look good.

身だしなみをきちんとしましょう。
