- Wench! Trollup! You buck-toothed, mop-riding, firefly from Hell!
-
(screams)
-
- I've waited centuries to say that. - Say what you want, just don't breathe on me.
-
This is Doug Jones, an actor who, with his tall, wiry build and
-
flexible, double-jointed limbs, has made a career out of playing odd characters
-
and creatures in heavy prosthetics and makeup.
-
He's perhaps best known for playing characters like The Fawn and The Pale Man
-
in 'Pan's Labyrinth', Abe Sapien in 'Hellboy',
-
and Billy Butcherson in 'Hocus Pocus'.
-
And, more recently, he plays Amphibian Man in Guillermo Del Toro's new film 'The Shape of Water'.
-
Doug got his start in a troupe of mimes at his college of Ball State University.
-
His experience as a mime as well as a contortionist would come in handy
-
time and time again throughout his career.
-
Then, after moving to California, one of his first major jobs was playing
-
Mac Tonight in a campaign of McDonald's commercials.
-
(singing) - It's Mac Tonight! Come on make it Mac Tonight!
-
Doug's first film role was in the 1988 horror film "The Newlydeads'.
-
- Why don't we take the boat out on the lake tomorrow? - Oh--oh, I don't--that boat belongs to the lodgekeeper...
-
A role like this were you actually see Doug's human face and body is an exception to the rule.
-
He would go on to play lots of characters that rendered him virtually unregozniable
-
with job offers flooding in thanks to word-of-mouth.
-
He eventually got a reputation for being not only someone who had a gift for giving life to these
-
strange creature-like roles, but also someone who is easy to work with and doesn't complain
-
about the long hours it takes to apply all the prosthetics and makeup involved.
-
After a small role in 'Batman Returns' as "Thin Clown"...
-
- Great speech, Oswald!
-
- Ungh!
-
...and Billy Butcherson in 'Hocus Pocus',
-
Doug worked on the 1997 sci-fi horror film 'Mimic', which is where he met Guillermo Del Toro,
-
who would cast him again as Abe Sapien in 'Hellboy'.
-
In the first film, the voice of Abe Sapien was voiced by David Hyde Pierce,
-
but when 'Hellboy II' rolled around, Doug Jones did it himself.
-
After providing the body for the Silver Surfer in the 'Fantastic 4' sequel,
-
Doug was thrilled to play the title role of Jerry in the indie film 'My Name Is Jerry'.
-
- Hi, my name is Jerry. I'm with Milton-Hill Publishing, I'm here to te--
-
Doug played a normal guy, and he was the lead in the movie.
-
Besides playing Amphibian Man in 'The Shape of Water',
-
Doug plays Saru in "Star Trek: Discovery".
-
So whether he's a friend, a monster, or whatever this thing is,
-
Doug Jones managed to steal the show every time even if you don't know it's him.
