Or that time you burned the roof of your mouth

初めてキスした時のことを 覚えていますか？

on a hot slice of pizza?

アツアツのピザを頬張って 口の中を火傷したことは？

What about playing tag or duck, duck, goose as a child?

子どもの頃にしたハンカチ落としは どうでしょう？

These are all instances where we're using touch to understand something.

どれも 触れることで 何かを理解している例です

And it's the basis of haptic design.

これがハプティックデザインの基礎です

\"Haptic\" means of or relating to the sense of touch.

「ハプティック」とは 触覚の、触覚に関するという意味で

And we've all been using that our entire lives.

私たちが生まれてからずっと 使ってきているものです

I was working on my computer when my friend,

私がパソコンで 作業していた時のことです

seeing me hunched over typing, walked over behind me.

猫背でタイプしている私を見た友人が 私の後ろにまわって

She put her left thumb into the left side of my lower back,

左手の親指を私の腰の左側に当て

while reaching her right index finger around to the front of my right shoulder.

右手の人差し指を 私の右肩の正面にまわしました

Instinctively, I sat up straight.

私は無意識に姿勢を正しました

In one quick and gentle gesture,

ちょっとした優しい身振り一つで

she had communicated how to improve my posture.

姿勢を良くしてくれたのです

The paper I was working on at that very moment

ちょうどその時 私が取り組んでいた論文は

centered around developing new ways to teach movement using technology.

テクノロジーによる 新たな動作教授法の開発に関するものでした

I wanted to create a suit that could teach a person kung fu.

カンフーの技を学べるスーツを 作ろうと思っていたんです

(Laughter)

But I had no idea how to communicate movement

どうすれば その場に指導者がいなくても

without an instructor being in the room.

動作を教えられるか 考えあぐねていました

And in that moment, it became crystal clear: touch.

でも その瞬間分かったのです 触覚を使えば良いのだと

If I had vibrating motors where she had placed each of her fingers,

先ほどの友人が指を当てた場所に 振動モーターを付けて

paired with motion-capture data of my current and optimal posture,

その時の姿勢と正しい姿勢の モーションキャプチャのデータを組み合わせれば

I could simulate the entire experience

その場に指導者がいなくても

without an instructor needing to be in the room.

同じような体験ができると考えたのです

But there was still one important part of the puzzle that was missing.

でも それを実現するには １つ重要なものが足りませんでした

If I want you to raise your wrist two inches off of your lap,

手首を膝から５cm上に上げるよう

using vibration,

振動を使って伝えるには

how do I tell you to do that?

どうすれば良いでしょう？

Do I put a motor at the top of your wrist, so you know to lift up?

手首の上側にモーターがあれば 上げるという意味だと分かりますか？

Or do I put one at the bottom of your wrist,

それとも 下側にモーターを付けた方が

so it feels like you're being pushed up?

押し上げられる感じがしますか？

There were no readily available answers

これといった答えは まだありませんでした

because there was no commonly agreed-upon haptic language

触覚で情報伝達する「触覚言語」として 広く使われているものはなかったからです

to communicate information with.

私は共同創設者と その触覚言語作りに取りかかりました

So my cofounders and I set out to create that language.

最初に作ったデバイスは カンフー・スーツではありませんでした

And the first device we built was not a kung fu suit.

（笑）

(Laughter)

でも シンプルさと有用性という点で

But in a way, it was even more impressive

ある意味 ずっと印象深いものができました

because of its simplicity and usefulness.

動作の中でも単純な形である移動を 実際にナビゲートすることから始めて

We started with the use case of navigation,

完成したのが「Wayband」です

which is a simplified form of movement.

腕に装着したデバイスを 振動させて合図を出し

We then created Wayband,

ユーザーを目的地に案内します

a wrist-wearable device that could orient a user toward a destination,

ユーザーは ぐるっと回転し

using vibrating cues.

この方向に進むべきと 感じたところで止まります

We would ask people to spin around

非公式な形で数百人に これを試してもらったところ

and to stop in a way that they felt was the right way to go.

ほとんどの人が15秒もすれば 合図を理解していました

Informally, we tried this with hundreds of people,

それほど直感的だったのです

and most could figure it out within about 15 seconds.

私たちが目指していたのは元々 皆を携帯電話から離れさせ

It was that intuitive.

現実世界に引き戻すことでしたが

Initially, we were just trying to get people out of their phones

実験を重ねるにつれ

and back into the real world.

But the more we experimented,

the more we realized that those who stood to benefit most from our work

were people who had little or no sight.

When we first approached a blind organization, they told us,

Build a device that everyone can use

but that's optimized for the blind experience.\"

We created our company WearWorks with three guiding principles:

make cool stuff,

触れるという観点で世界を想像し直すことです

create the greatest impact we can in our lifetimes

2017年11月5日

and reimagine an entire world designed for touch.

目が見えない人が Waybandを使い

And on November 5, 2017,

ニューヨークシティマラソンで 最初の25kmを走ることに成功しました

Wayband helped a person who was blind

視覚的な支援を一切受けずにです

run the first 15 miles of the New York City Marathon

（拍手）

without any sighted assistance.

雨がひどくなり ゴールまでは行けなかったのですが

(Applause)

それは どうでも良いんです

It didn't get him through the entire race due to the heavy rain,

（笑）

but that didn't matter.

私たちは 複雑なルートでも

(Laughter)

触覚を使ってナビできる と証明したのです

We had proved the point:

でも なぜ触覚か？

that it was possible to navigate a complex route using only touch.

肌に元々備わっている敏感さは

So, why touch?

目が何百万種類もの色を見分け

The skin has an innate sensitivity

耳が複雑な音高や音色を聞き分けるのと 同じようなものです

akin to the eyes' ability to recognize millions of colors

とはいえ 意思疎通の手段としては

or the ears' ability to recognize complex pitch and tone.

モールス符号のような 携帯電話のバイブくらいの価値しかありません

Yet, as a communications channel,

突然 キスやパンチを受けた時

it's been largely relegated to Morse code-like cell phone notifications.

本能的にすぐその場で体が動きますが

If you were to suddenly receive a kiss or a punch,

脳はその裏で 現状に追いつくべく稼働し

your reaction would be instinctive and immediate.

今何が起こったのか 詳細を理解しようとしています

Meanwhile, your brain would be playing catch-up on the back end

本能と比べると 意識的な思考はとても遅いのです

to understand the details of what just occurred.

でも カタツムリの歩みの言語習得に比べれば 稲妻のような速さです

And compared to instincts, conscious thought is pretty slow.

私は膨大な時間をかけて

But it's a lightning bolt

スペイン語、日本語、ドイツ語 そして今はスウェーデン語を学んでいますが

compared to the snail's pace of language acquisition.

程度の差こそあれ失敗でした

I spent a considerable amount of time

（笑）

learning Spanish, Japanese, German and currently Swedish,

でも その失敗の中で様々な言語の仕組みの 核となるものを見つけました

with varying degrees of failure.

そのお陰で 私たちのチームは

(Laughter)

すでに確立された言語の 言語学的秩序を元に

But within those failures were kernels of how different languages are organized.

触覚だけに頼った まったく新しい触覚言語を 作ることを思いついたのです

That gave our team insight

それと同時に 言語の仕組みを使うのが 情報伝達に最適でない時もあると知りました

into how to use the linguistic order of well-established languages

どんな文化でも 笑顔は笑顔であるように

as inspiration for an entirely new haptic language,

触覚言語にも 言語や文化の境界を超えるような

one based purely on touch.

何か普遍的なものがあるとしたら どうでしょう？

It also showed us when using language mechanics wasn't the best way

いわば 万国共通の言語です

to deliver information.

「ビー・ビー・ビー、ビー・ビー」 という振動は

In the same way a smile is a smile across every culture,

「止まれ」という意味だ と学習させることもできるでしょう

what if there was some underlying mechanism of touch

でもハプティック・デザイナーとしては 更なる高みを目指します

that transcended linguistic and cultural boundaries?

「止まれ」をデザインしたらどうでしょう？

A universal language, of sorts.

状況は違えど

You see, I could give you buzz-buzz-buzz, buzz-buzz,

ほとんどの方が 乗っていた乗り物が急停止し

and you would eventually learn

それに合わせて体が反応したという 経験をお持ちでしょう

that that particular vibration means \"stop.\"

「止まれ」という時に

But as haptic designers, we challenged ourselves.

決まった振動パターンを 送るのも１つですが

What would it be like to design \"stop?\"

止まろうと自然に思わせるような

Well, based on context,

触覚を使った体験を デザインすることもできます

most of us have the experience of being in a vehicle

これは 触覚の合図に任意に意味を与えるより 大変なことです

and having that vehicle stop suddenly, along with our body's reaction to it.

深い共感を得ることが必要ですし

So if I wanted you to stop,

人間の体験を意味のある洞察に落とし込み

I could send you a vibration pattern, sure.

それを触覚を使った身振りや商品に 入れ込む能力も必要です

Or, I could design a haptic experience

ハプティックデザインで

that just made stopping feel like it was the right thing to do.

周辺環境を感じ取り反応する 人間の能力は高まるでしょう

And that takes more than an arbitrary assignment of haptic cues to meanings.

物理的にも仮想的にもです

It takes a deep empathy.

ここに触覚という未知の領域があるのです

It also takes the ability to distill human experience into meaningful insights

私たちを取り巻く世界に対する見方を 変えることにもなるでしょう

and then into haptic gestures and products.
