歴史とは何でしょうか？

There is a stereotype that history should be focused on the rulers,

それは勝者によって綴られたものです

like Lenin or Trotsky.

歴史は 支配者に焦点を当てるべきものだ という考え方があります

As a result, people in many countries, like mine, Russia,

例えば レーニンやトロツキーにです

look at history as something that was predetermined

その結果 私の国であるロシアを含め 多くの国の人々が

or determined by the leaders,

歴史は指導者たちによってあらかじめ 決定された あるいは決定されるものだ

and common people could not influence it in any way.

Many Russians today do not believe that Russia could ever have been

or ever will be a truly democratic nation,

and this is due to the way history has been framed

to the citizens of Russia.

And this is not true.

To prove it, I spent two years of my life trying to go 100 years back,

I asked myself, what if the internet and Facebook existed 100 years ago?

not only their "genius ideas."

Our project was a shock for many Russians,

who used to think that our country has always been an autocratic empire

and the ideas of freedom and democracy could never have prevailed,

just because democracy was not our destiny.

But if we take a broader look,

it's not that black and white.

Yes, 1917 led to 70 years of communist dictatorship.

そんな極端な話ではなくなります

But with this project, we see that Russia could have had a different history

確かに1917年から70年間 共産主義の独裁体制が続きました

and a democratic future, as any other country could or still can.

しかしこの企画によって ロシアは別の歴史を 歩むこともできたことが分かりました

Reading the posts from 1917,

他の国が成せた そしてまだ成すことが可能な 民主主義の国としての未来をです

you learn that Russia was the first country in the world

1917年の投稿を読むと

to abolish the death penalty,

ロシアが世界で最初に

or one of the first ones to grant women voting rights.

死刑を廃止した国であったこと

Knowing history and understanding how ordinary people influenced history

さらには 世界で最初に女性の投票権が 認められた国の１つであったことが分かります

can help us create a better future,

私たちが歴史を知り 普通の人々がいかに 歴史に影響を与えたかを理解することで

because history is just a rehearsal of what's happening right now.

より良い未来を築くことができるのです

We do need new ways of telling history,

なぜなら 歴史は今起きていることの リハーサルに過ぎないからです

and this year, for example,

私たちには歴史を伝えていく 新たな方法が必要です

we started a new online project that is called 1968Digital.com,

例えば今年

and that is an online documentary series

私たちは1968Digital.com という 新たなオンライン企画をスタートしました

that gives you an impression of that year, 1968,

これは オンラインの記録作品の１つで

a year marked by global social change

1968年を印象深いものにします

that, in many ways, created the world as we know it now.

世界的に社会変動が起きた年です

But we are making that history alive

それが 今私たちが生きる社会を あらゆる面で形作ったのです

by imagining what if all the main characters could use mobile phones ...

私たちはその歴史を蘇らせようとしています

just like that?

もし 歴史の主役たちが携帯電話を 使う事が出来たらと想像することでです

And we see that a lot of individuals

こんな風に

were facing the same challenges and were fighting for the same values,

多くの人々が 同じような問題に直面し

no matter if they lived in the US or in USSR

同じ価値観を持って 戦っていたのです

or in France or in China or in Czechoslovakia.

生きていたのがアメリカであれ ソビエトであれ

By exposing history in such a democratic way,

フランスであれ 中国であれ チェコスロヴァキアであれ関係ありません

through social media,

このようなソーシャルメディアを通した 民主的な方法で

we show that people in power are not the only ones making choices.

歴史を人の目にさらすことで

That gives any user a possibility of reclaiming history.

権力を持つ人間だけが 最終決定を下すのではないと示せます

Ordinary people matter.

どんな人にも歴史を覆せる可能性があるのです

They have an impact.

普通の人々が大事なのです

Ideas matter.

彼らには影響力があります

Journalists, scientists, philosophers matter.

考え方が大事なのです

We shape society.

ジャーナリストや科学者や哲学者も大事です

We all make history.

全員で社会を形作っています
