Meet Momofuku Ando.

安藤百福さんをご紹介します。

Born in Taiwan in 1910, Momofuku Ando was a natural-born entrepreneur.

1910年、台湾に生まれた安藤百福さんは生まれながらの事業家でした。

By the time he was 22, he had already started a textile company.

22歳になる頃には、すでに繊維関係の会社を起こしていました。

By 1933, he had already traveled to nearby Japan.

1933年になる頃には、近場の日本に旅行をしています。

After World War II, he became a Japanese citizen and started a merchandising firm.

第二次世界大戦後に、彼は日本国籍を取得して小売会社を立ち上げました。

That's pretty impressive stuff.

それって、なかなかスゴイ事ですよね。

However, his stuff of genius isn't related to merchandising or fabric.

しかしながら、彼の商才は商品小売や生地とは関係ないんです。

It's noodles; instant noodles, actually.

ヌードル麺、正確にはインスタントヌードルこそ彼の真骨頂です。

When Ando saw a line of people waiting for ramen in the cold, he had a jolt of inspiration, saying "Peace will come to the world when the people have had enough to eat."

安藤さんが人々が寒い中ラーメンを食べたくて行列を作っている時、パッと閃いて「皆が食べる物に困らなくなれば世界に平和が来る」と考えました。

At the time, noodles were cooked and served fresh.

当時の麺類はその場で調理して出されていましたが、

But what if there was a way to make them more convenient?

もっと便利な作り方があったらどうでしょうか？

Ando spent a year tinkering with noodles.

安藤さんは1年かけて構想を練りました。

He learned that by sprinkling soup on the noodles, kneading them, and letting them partially dry, they become flavored and also keep longer.

スープを麺に振りかけて捏ねて、一部乾燥させれば味が付いて長持ちすることに気付きました。

The first instant noodles were born in 1958.

最初のインスタントヌードルは1958年に生まれました。

Now, instead of waiting in a freezing line for hours, anyone on the planet could have noodles in just three minutes.

こうして、極寒の中何時間も並んで待つ必要がなく地球上の誰でも3分でラーメンが食べられるようになったのです。

He founded the Nissin Food Products Company, and instant noodles quickly became one of the world's favorite convenience foods, found in hundreds of countries, and even in space.

彼は日清食品会社を起業して、インスタントヌードルは瞬く間に世界でも有数のインスタント食品に成長し、世界各国はもとより、宇宙でも食されています。

Ando's last invention was Space Ram, a noodle designed to function in zero gravity.

安藤さんの最後の発明は、無重力状態でも食べられる「宇宙ラーメン」でした。
