When I graduated UCLA, I moved to northern California,

and I lived in a little town called Elk

I'd go to the general store for a cup of coffee

and a brownie, and I'd ship my film

to San Francisco, and lo and behold, two days later,

きちんと戻ってきます

it would end up on my front door,

ハリウッドの渋滞で 疲れ果てるより

which was way better than having to fight the traffic

よっぽどましでした

of Hollywood. (Music)

お金はありませんでしたが

I didn't have much money,

時間と好奇心なら たんとありました

but I had time and a sense of wonder. (Music)

それで微速度撮影を やるようになりました

So I started shooting time-lapse photography.

４分の映像を作るのに 丸１月かかりましたが

It would take me a month to shoot a four-minute

私に使えるものは 時間だけだったのです

roll of film, because that's all I could afford.

花の微速度撮影を 休むことなく

I've been shooting time-lapse flowers continuously,

１日24時間 週７日

non-stop, 24 hours a day, seven days a week,

30年間やってきましたが

for over 30 years, and to see them move

花の動く様は 決して 見飽きることのないダンスです

is a dance I'll never get tired of.

花の美は その色彩と味と触感で 私たちを満たしてくれます

Their beauty immerses us with color, taste, touch.

花はまた 私たちの食べ物の ３分の１をもたらしています

It also provides a third of the food we eat.

Beauty and seduction is nature's tools for survival,

なぜなら私たちは 愛するものを守るからです

because we protect what we fall in love with.

It opens our hearts, and makes us realize

自分は自然の一部で切り離されては いないのだと気付かせてくれます

we are a part of nature and we're not separate from it.

自分を自然の中に 置いて見る時

When we see ourselves in nature, it also connects us

to every one of us, because it's clear

that it's all connected in one.

私の映像を見た人はよく “Oh my God” と口にします

When people see my images, a lot of times they'll say,

この言葉が何を意味するか 考えたことはありますか？

"Oh my God." Have you ever wondered what that meant?

“Oh” は注意を 引かれたことを意味し

The "oh" means it caught your attention,

今 この瞬間へと 心を向けさせます

makes you present, makes you mindful.

“my” は自分の心の 奥深くにあるものと

The "my" means it connects with something deep

繋がることを意味します

inside your soul.

心の声を聞く入り口が 作り出されるのです

It creates a gateway for your inner voice to rise up

“God”は何でしょう？

and be heard. And "God"?

Godはみんなが辿り 力付けられたいと思う旅

God is that personal journey we all want to be on,

命が讃えられる世界との 繋がりを感じたいと願う

to be inspired, to feel like we're connected to a universe

個人的な旅です

that celebrates life.

私たちが受け取る 情報の８割は

Did you know that 80 percent

目から入って来る というのをご存じですか？

of the information we receive comes through our eyes?

光のエネルギーを 音階にたとえるなら

And if you compare light energy to musical scales,

it would only be one octave that the naked eye could see,

And aren't we grateful for our brains that can, you know,

take this electrical impulse that comes from light energy

to create images in order for us to explore our world?

And aren't we grateful that we have hearts

喜びと自然の美を感じ取れる

that can feel these vibrations

in order for us to allow ourselves to feel the pleasure

and the beauty of nature?

So I have a gift I want to share with you today,

a project I'm working on called Happiness Revealed,

and it'll give us a glimpse into that perspective

from the point of view of a child and an elderly man

Child: When I watch TV,

ただの作り物で フリをしているだけだけど

it's just some shows that you just -- that are pretend,

探求すれば

and when you explore, you get

今よりもっと想像力がついて

more imagination than you already had,

想像力がつけば

and when you get more imagination,

もっと深く進みたくなって

it makes you want to go deeper in

もっとたくさん 素敵なものが見られるの

so you can get more and see beautifuller things,

道みたいに—それが道だとしたら 海辺か何かに続いていて

like the path, if it's a path, it could lead you to a beach,

とてもきれいなの

or something, and it could be beautiful.

Elderly Man: You think this is just another day in your life?

違います これは今日あなたに

It's not just another day. It's the one day that is given to you

与えられた 特別な１日なのです

与えられたもの 贈り物なんです

It's given to you. It's a gift.

今 あなたに託されている １つしかない贈り物で

It's the only gift that you have right now,

それに応える 唯一正しい態度は

and the only appropriate response

感謝です

is gratefulness.

この特別な１日という 素晴らしい贈り物に

If you do nothing else but to cultivate that response

応える力を 育もうと努めるなら

to the great gift that this unique day is,

それが自分に与えられる

if you learn to respond

最初で最後の日で あるかのように

as if it were the first day in your life

応える術を 身に付けるなら

and the very last day,

then you will have spent this day very well.

Begin by opening your eyes and be surprised

that incredible array of colors that is constantly offered to us

for pure enjoyment.

空を見上げましょう

Look at the sky.

みんな滅多に 空を見上げたりしません

We so rarely look at the sky.

雲が行き来し 刻々と 空がどれほど姿を変えるか

We so rarely note how different it is

滅多に気が付きません

from moment to moment, with clouds coming and going.

天気を気にするだけです

We just think of the weather,

天気だって

and even with the weather, we don't think of

とても細かなニュアンスがあることに 気を向けません

all the many nuances of weather.

いい天気か 悪い天気かだけです

We just think of good weather and bad weather.

今日 この瞬間の 天気は特別で

This day, right now, has unique weather,

まったく同じものが

maybe a kind that will never exactly

再び現れることはありません

in that form come again.

今の空にあるのと まったく同じ雲が

That formation of clouds in the sky will never be the same

再び現れることはないのです

as it is right now.

目を開いて 見てください

Open your eyes. Look at that.

会う人たちの顔を

Look at the faces of people whom you meet.

１つひとつの顔の背後に ものすごい物語があります

Each one has an incredible story behind their face,

すっかり理解するのは 不可能なほどの物語です

a story that you could never fully fathom,

物語はその人自身だけでなく 先祖にも繋がっています

not only their own story, but the story of their ancestors.

そこまで遡り

We all go back so far,

そしてこの瞬間 この日に

and in this present moment, on this day,

会う人々すべての 何世代もの命の繋がりを通し

all the people you meet, all that life from generations

世界中の 幾多の場所から

and from so many places all over the world

一緒になって あなたの元へと

flows together and meets you here

命の水のように流れてくるのです ただ心を開いて飲みさえするなら

like a life-giving water, if you only open your heart and drink.

So these are just a few of an enormous number of gifts

ほんのいくつかです

to which we can open your heart.

だから これらすべての 恵みに心を開き

And so I wish you that you will open your heart

自分を通して 流れるようにしましょう

to all these blessings, and let them flow through you,

今日出会う すべての人たちにも

that everyone whom you will meet on this day

その恵みが届くように

will be blessed by you,

just by your eyes,
