  • I'm Mayim Bialik, and I play neurobiologist Amy Farrel Feller on the Big Bang Theory.

  • In real life, I'm actually a neuroscientist as well.

  • Do you want to know my most often-heard myth that's not true?

  • Myth number one

  • Animal testing is the only way to ensure that drugs are safe for human use.

  • All drugs that enter into clinical trials must undergo extensive animal testing.

  • Yet, 90% fail in human trials.

  • Best case?

  • That might mean you, the patient, experience absolutely no benefit from the drug.

  • Worst case?

  • You end up with, say, a damaged liver, kidneys, blind, or dead.

  • yah.

  • Myth number two.

  • Without animal testing, there's no hope to cure diseases.

  • (myth!)

  • Not only do alternatives exist, they're being developed at record speed.

  • The world is moving towards a future dominated by more sophisticated methods.

  • Using computers, robots, and even artificial and real human cells and organs.

  • These methods are faster, often less expensive, and as effective - if not more - than current and often extremely out-dated animal experiencing used today.

  • Myth number three.

  • There is nothing we can do to stop animal testing.

  • The good news is, groups like the Humane Society of the United States

  • are working towards the development and acceptance of non-animal test methods world wide.

  • And you can definitely help, end cruel and unnecessary animal testing.
