Today I feel so happy to be here to share some ideas of learning English with you.

今日は、ここに来て英語学習のアイデアを皆さんと共有できて、とても幸せだと感じています。

Since I was a little girl,

小さい頃から

I have been very interested in English.

英語にとても興味を持ちました。

Therefore, I asked my mom to hire a foreign teacher as my tutor to teach me English.

そこで、私は母に外国人の先生を家庭教師として雇ってもらい、英語を教えてもらいました。

The teacher, who is a British,

イギリス人の先生。

came to my house to have conversations with me.

と会話をしに来てくれました。

At that time, I thought I could improve my English ability

その時に、英語力を伸ばせると思ったのが

by having a foreigner speaking English with me.

外国人に英語を話してもらうことで

However, I was totally wrong.

しかし、私は完全に間違っていました。

WHY?

なぜ？

Because I didn’t have sufficient vocabulary in my mind.

私の心の中に十分な語彙がなかったからです。

I didn’t have excellent listening comprehension

聴解力が優れていなかった

to understand what he was talking about.

を理解するために

At that time, each time he came, I was collapsed.

その時は、彼が来るたびに、私は倒れていました。

I didn’t know what he was doing most of the time.

ほとんど何をしているのかわからなかった。

Some embarrassing conversations even happened to me.

恥ずかしい会話もありました。

For instance, he asked me,

例えば、彼は私に尋ねた。

“What does your father do?”

"お父さんは何をしてるの？"

I said, “My father is a businessman, and she is….”

私は、"父はサラリーマンで、彼女は・・・"と言いました。

The teacher responded with astonishment,

先生は驚いた様子で答えてくれました。

“What? Is your father ‘a woman’?”

"お父さんは女なの？"

Oh my goodness, how could I make that mistake?

やれやれ、どうしてそんなミスをしてしまったんだろう？

I felt so embarrassed and disappointed.

恥ずかしくて悔しい思いをしました。

I spent a lot of money to learn English, but I could hardly answer a simple question.

英語を学ぶために高いお金をかけたのに、素朴な疑問にはほとんど答えられませんでした。

After that, I made up my mind to practice English by myself.  

その後、自分で英語の練習をしようと心に決めました。

When I walked and saw people on the street,

歩いていて道行く人を見ると

I would whisper with a low voice and speak to myself,

私は低い声で小声で独り言を言っていた。

“Oh, she is a woman, and he is a man. She is beautiful, and he is ugly.”

"ああ、彼女は女で彼は男。"彼女は美しく、彼は醜い"

By doing so, I could easily distinguish the difference between “he” and “she”,

そうすることで、「彼」と「彼女」の違いを簡単に見分けることができました。

and I succeeded.

と成功しました。

From then on, I always looked for some English words that were alien to me,

それ以来、私はいつも外来語のような英単語を探していました。

such as the priority seat on the MRT

MRTの優先席など

or the instructions on a bottle and so on.

とか、ボトルの説明書とかに書いてあったりします。

Any new word, any new information about English,

新しい単語、英語の新しい情報があれば何でも。

would be absorbed by my brain.

私の脳に吸収されてしまいます。

That’s the way I obtained the sense of achievement in learning English.

そうやって英語学習の達成感を手に入れました。

As for my teaching technique,

is that I like to inspire my students to have passion for English.

それは、私が生徒たちに英語への情熱を抱かせることが好きだということです。

For example, I would teach my students the longest word in the dictionary,

The reason is that

I want to induce their curiosity and encourage them to have a try.

Whether the students like English or not,

they are all willing to give it a try.

みんな喜んでやってくれます。

That’s how I draw their attention and trigger their inquisitive mind.

そうやって彼らの注意を引きつけ、探究心の引き金にしているのです。

However, I insist that all Taiwanese students should learn English grammar.

しかし、私はすべての台湾人学生が英文法を学ぶべきだと主張しています。

It’s because we are not native speakers.

それは、私たちがネイティブスピーカーではないからです。

If you want to speak correct English fluently,

正しい英語を流暢に話したいなら

you have to learn English grammar thoroughly.

英文法を徹底して学ばなければなりません。

Maybe it sounds like a cliché,

決まり文句に聞こえるかもしれませんが

but I know the significance of that.

でも、その意味がよくわかる。

On the other hand, if you want to learn speaking and listening,

逆に、スピーキングやリスニングを学びたい場合は

there are a wide range of methods offered to you.

あなたに提供される様々な方法があります。

Take Voicetube as an example,

Voicetubeを例に挙げてみましょう。

you can learn by yourself to cultivate your listening ability

独学でリスニング力を鍛える

and speak the words loudly with the subtitles.

With such good methods,

you can improve your capability to learn English well.

英語を上手に身につけるための能力を向上させることができます。

I believe that English is beautiful as long as you love it.

英語は好きであれば美しいものだと思います。
