- President Trump has done it again.
-
He's gonna ban yet more social media.
-
We're looking at a New York Times story entitled
-
"Trump Bans Alipay and 7 Other Chinese Apps."
-
What President Trump did yesterday
-
is issue an executive order which prohibits
-
these Chinese pay apps from doing transactions.
-
If we're looking at the exact ones that are banned,
-
it is Alipay, it is CamScanner, QQ Wallet,
-
SHAREit, Tencent QQ, Vmate, WeChat Pay, and WPS Office.
-
In China, lots of different citizens
-
do all their online commerce using pay apps.
-
And so, this really, this executive order
-
which bands these apps in America
-
really does hinder Chinese app commerce.
-
And so it has a big effect on the future
-
for Chinese commerce.
-
Now, a lot of people are saying
-
why is president Trump doing this ban again?
-
You'll remember back in, I believe September of 2020,
-
President Trump banned not only Tiktok, but also WeChat.
-
Well, the reason why he's banning again, these apps,
-
is because he believes it's a national security threat.
-
He says that a lot of these different apps collect a lot
-
of different information, private information,
-
and the Chinese government can somehow have access
-
to this information
-
through these Chinese companies
-
and could blackmail potentially Americans,
-
could maybe spy on Americans.
-
And he says that's a big enough threat
-
that he wants to ban these different apps.
-
So, we'll look at this paragraph right here.
-
It says here it's quoting the executive order.
-
"In the order, the president said
-
that China had been using 'bulk data collection'
-
to advance its economic and national security agenda
-
that the targeted apps put Americans at risk."
-
So, that's the reason that he's advancing
-
for banning these apps.
-
My question to you, which you can put in the comments below,
-
is do you believe this?
-
Do you believe that China is,
-
one, trying to get Americans private data
-
in order to somehow hurt America,
-
hurt our economic interests.
-
And then also, let me know if we're doing this to China,
-
you know, there's a lot of other different countries
-
that Americans use their apps from.
-
In other words, there are, you know,
-
let's say Israel has a number
-
of different countries that have apps that Americans use.
-
If we're gonna ban China apps,
-
should we ban other countries' apps?
-
Let me know in the comments section below.
-
We're gonna get into a little more discussion here.
-
China, of course, is extremely angry about this of course.
-
A spokesperson from China's Foreign Ministry
-
says "another example of American bullying,
-
hegemonic behavior, which has overextended
-
the concept of national security, abused national power,
-
and unreasonably suppressed foreign companies.
-
It harms others without benefiting itself."
-
So, they're angry and they're gonna take action
-
to protect their Chinese companies
-
and maybe they'll take action against America.
-
We don't know.
-
Now, how does this affect you?
-
And who does this affect the most?
-
Your first thought might be, this affects Chinese Americans.
-
People who use these Chinese pay apps when they go back
-
and forth between America and China.
-
You'll know that a lot of these apps actually require you
-
to have a Chinese bank account
-
or you've gotta be referred from a citizen of China.
-
So, a lot of us don't have access to these apps.
-
So, who does it really hurt?
-
I'm thinking, not just Chinese Americans,
-
but more importantly, Joe Biden.
-
You know, you've gotta remember,
-
Joe Biden may be president soon
-
and if he is, then he's gonna be saddled
-
with his executive order which requires a 45 day period
-
of investigation by the government.
-
So, in order to unwind this executive order,
-
he may face a concern about looking weak with China.
-
He doesn't wanna look like, you know,
-
an executive order's passed
-
and there's really evidence to support it
-
and then all of a sudden he takes the presidency
-
and he says, "Oh, you know what?
-
I don't really want this executive order."
-
It may hurt his reputation
-
with China and the U.S. reputation with China.
-
So, there are a number of different possible effects
-
of this executive order.
-
It is also interesting how President Trump
-
with, I mean, I think he's out of office allegedly
-
on January 20th of 2021,
-
why he's passing these executive orders?
-
It's also interesting,
-
are there going to be more executive orders
-
that he rushes to get out before he gets out of office?
-
Apparently.
-
Let me know in the comment section below
-
about what you think about this executive order
-
which bands yet more social media.
-
You have to remember, this is like the first time
-
the president of the United States,
-
and I don't mean just Trump, I mean any president
-
of the United States is actively passing
-
or enacting executive orders
-
that ban certain social media apps.
-
Do you think this is appropriate?
-
Should presidents issue executive orders that ban an app?
-
It kinda doesn't make sense to me.
-
Oftentimes I don't know exactly what the logistics are
-
of banning an app.
-
So, what do you think?
-
Let me know in the comments section below
-
and I'll see you soon.
