because staying is better in some ways,

moving is better in others,

ある面では留まる方が良いし

and neither is better than the other overall.

別の面では動いた方が良いし

We shouldn't think that all hard choices are big.

総合的には どっちが良いと 言い切れないのです

Let's say you're deciding what to have for breakfast.

難しい選択は 重大なことだけでは ありませんよ

You could have high fiber bran cereal or a chocolate donut.

朝食に何を食べるか 迷っているとしましょう

Suppose what matters in the choice

食物繊維たっぷりの シリアルにするか

is tastiness and healthfulness.

チョコレート･ドーナツにするか

The cereal is better for you,

仮に 選択のポイントが

the donut tastes way better,

美味しいか 体に良いか だとしましょう

but neither is better than the other overall,

シリアルの方が体に良いですが

a hard choice.

ドーナツの方が ずっと美味しい

Realizing that small choices

でも 総合的には どっちが良いと 言い切れない

can also be hard

難しい選択です

may make big hard choices seem less intractable.

After all, we manage to figure out what to have for breakfast,

so maybe we can figure out

whether to stay in the city

or uproot for the new job in the country.

We also shouldn't think that hard choices are hard

because we are stupid.

When I graduated from college,

I couldn't decide between two careers,

philosophy and law.

There are amazing things you can learn

and all from the comfort of an armchair.

But I came from a modest immigrant family

was having a pork tongue and jelly sandwich

so the thought of spending my whole life

well, that struck me as the height of extravagance and frivolity.

So I got out my yellow pad,

I drew a line down the middle,

and I tried my best to think of the reasons

I remember thinking to myself,

I'd compare them side by side,

I'd see that one was better,

and the choice would be easy.

But I got no DVD,

どっちかの方が良いと

and because I couldn't figure out which was better,

わかれば選択は簡単になる

I did what many of us do in hard choices:

でも DVDは届かなかったし

I took the safest option.

どちらが良いか わからなかったので

Fear of being an unemployed philosopher

私は難しい選択に際して 多くの人が するようにしました

led me to become a lawyer,

最も安全な道を選んだのです

and as I discovered,

哲学者では就職できない という恐れから

lawyering didn't quite fit.

It wasn't who I was.

So now I'm a philosopher,

and I study hard choices,

and I can tell you that fear of the unknown,

while a common motivational default

rests on a misconception of them.

It's a mistake to think that in hard choices,one alternative really is better than the other,

but we're too stupid to know which,

and since we don't know which, we might as well

難しい選択を迫られた時 こう考えるのは間違いです

take the least risky option.

１つの選択肢が他より良いのだけど

Even taking two alternatives side by side

頭が悪いから どれだかわからない

with full information, a choice can still be hard.

どれだか わからないから

Hard choices are hard

一番 リスクの少ないのにしておこう

not because of us or our ignorance;

２つの選択肢を横に並べて

they're hard because there is no best option.

全ての情報を把握していても やっぱり選択は難しいのです

Now, if there's no best option,

難しい選択は難しいのです

if the scales don't tip in favor of one alternative

私たちが無知だからではなく

over another,

最良の選択というものがないから 難しいのです

then surely the alternatives must be equally good.

So maybe the right thing to say in hard choices

is that they're between equally good options.

差がつかないなら

That can't be right.

If alternatives are equally good,

つまり難しい選択においては

you should just flip a coin between them,

and it seems a mistake to think,

There's another reason for thinking

that hard choices aren't choices

Suppose you have a choice between two jobs:

you could be an investment banker

or a graphic artist.

考えられる理由は他にもあります

There are a variety of things that matter in such a choice,

like the excitement of the work,

achieving financial security,

having time to raise a family, and so on.

Maybe the artist's career puts you

Maybe the banking career

puts you on the cutting edge

Imagine the two jobs however you like

so that neither is better than the other.

新しい形の財テクの

Now suppose we improve one of them a bit.

最先端に携わることに なるでしょう

Suppose the bank, wooing you,

２つの仕事は どっちが良いとも

adds 500 dollars a month to your salary.

言い切れないと 考えてください

Does the extra money now make the banking job

では ここで片方の選択肢の条件を 少し良くします

better than the artist one?

仮に銀行が あなたに来てほしくて

Not necessarily.

月給に500ドル上乗せしたとします

A higher salary makes the banking job

お金が増えたことで 銀行の仕事は

better than it was before,

アーティストより良くなりましたか？

but it might not be enough to make

そうとは限りません

being a banker better than being an artist.

銀行の仕事としては 給料が上がったことで

But if an improvement in one of the jobs

上がる前より良くなりましたが

doesn't make it better than the other,

then the two original jobs

良くなるという程では ないかもしれません

could not have been equally good.

If you start with two things that are equally good,

and you improve one of them,

it now must be better than the other.

That's not the case with options in hard choices.

So now we've got a puzzle.

片方の条件を良くしたら

We've got two jobs.

もう片方より良くなるはずです

Neither is better than the other,

難しい選択の場合 そうは行かないのです

nor are they equally good.

困りましたね

So how are we supposed to choose?

２つの仕事がある

Something seems to have gone wrong here.

どっちが良いと言い切れない

Maybe the choice itself is problematic

同じくらい良いわけでもない

and comparison is impossible.

では どうやって選べばいいのでしょう？

But that can't be right.

どこかに間違いがあるようです

It's not like we're trying to choose between

選択するということ自体に問題があり

two things that can't be compared.

比較はできないのでしょうか

We're weighing the merits of two jobs, after all,

でも そんなはず ありません

not the merits of the number nine

比較できない２つの中から

and a plate of fried eggs.

選ぼうとしているわけでは ありません

A comparison of the overall merits of two jobs

２つの仕事の長所を 天秤にかけているのであって

is something we can make,

数字の９と 目玉焼きの

and one we often do make.

長所を比べているのとは違います

I think the puzzle arises

２つの仕事の総合的な価値を 比較することは

because of an unreflective assumption

we make about value.

We unwittingly assume that values

like justice, beauty, kindness,

are akin to scientific quantities,

like length, mass and weight.

Take any comparative question not involving value,

There are only three possibilities.

Not so with values.

As post-Enlightenment creatures,

we tend to assume

that scientific thinking holds the key

to everything of importance in our world,

but the world of value

The stuff of the one world

can be quantified by real numbers.

We shouldn't assume

that the world of is, of lengths and weights,

has the same structure as the world of ought,

So if what matters to us --

a child's delight, the love you have for your partner —

I like to say that the alternatives are

When alternatives are on a par,

it may matter very much which you choose,

but one alternative isn't better than the other.

Rather, the alternatives are in

the same neighborhood of value,

in the same league of value,

while at the same time being very different

in kind of value.

That's why the choice is hard.

Understanding hard choices in this way

ただ価値の内容が

uncovers something about ourselves we didn't know.

大きく異なっています

Each of us has the power

だからこそ その選択は難しいのです

to create reasons.

難しい選択を このように理解すると

Imagine a world in which every choice you face

自分でも知らなかった 自分についての発見をします

is an easy choice,

私たちは それぞれ皆

that is, there's always a best alternative.

理由を生み出す力を持っている ということです

If there's a best alternative,

簡単な選択にしか直面しない という世界を

then that's the one you should choose,

想像してみてください

because part of being rational

常に最良の選択肢がある世界です

is doing the better thing rather than the worse thing,

最良の選択肢があれば

choosing what you have most reason to choose.

In such a world,

we'd have most reason

悪いことより良いことをするべきですし

to wear black socks instead of pink socks,
