He was, AH, hard worker who loved learning so much that he married his teacher. But he led the country at a difficult time. Voters were sharply divided over slavery. Filmore tried to please everybody by passing a compromise bill that both supported and limited slavery. The bill did not prevent the country's civil war, and it cost. Fillmore is political even today, if you remember him.
